Postby Brannmanndan » Sep 9th, '08, 23:10

I was at Keith Barry's show last night and saw him perform the spike under a cup trick (don't know the real name of the trick). after watching it loads of times on youtube I still can't get it. anyone know where I can get this trick or even the official name.

You can get a version at http://www.worldmagicshop.co.uk called Spike for £115

It's not a routine for the faint hearted as a number of experienced magicians have managed to 'spike' themselves. OUCH

I think this awful trick should be banned. It is bloody dangerous and has gone wrong more times than the bullet catch.

And Keith Barry has a disgraceful variation where he puts the spectator in danger rather than himself.

This is one of those tricks that I hate too, it might just be me but I really don't see the magic in it. It just seems to be performed for shock value to me.

I think I've seen a version on http://www.mreenterprises.co.uk/ if you do want to get it.

I hate this effect with a passion.
Its not magical, its not mentalism, its not entertaining, and it goes wrong.

Actually it is VERY entertaining if it goes wrong. At least to me. I have a warped mind.

Personally, i've had a lot of success with my scorpion. I don't however approve of keith barry's version, even although I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

He doesn't know what he is doing. I heard that he has done the bloody thing wrong. Bloody being the operative word. On somebody else's hand-not his own.

Or at least I heard that he did it wrong. Maybe I am wrong and this is just a rumour. I can't confirm it and don't know the details.

It is a bloody stupid trick anyway. It should never be done. It is far too risky. There was one idiot in Toronto who damaged his hand so badly that he couldn't work for a long time. It put paid to his sleight of hand career which was actually a blessing in disguise since he wasn't much good at it anyway.

I was highly amused that the booker threatened to sue him for causing trauma to the children that were present. The daft b***** shouldn't have been performing it in front of children in the first place.

I saw it go very wrong once in a comedy club. There were only two good points. One the magician used his own hand, secondly while the knife pentrated the hand so the point actually came through the back of the hand the magician in question had no lasting damage.

Oh, I heard about the guy in Toronto, I did not realize that there were children in the audience. That is almost as stupid as the guy in Vancouver who got upset because his client refused to pay him because he was doing cig manipulation at a childrens party. All his advertizing shows standard kidshow stuff, and here he shows up in a top hat and tails doing cigs...moron.

Just do a youtube or google video search for "magic trick gone wrong" and you will find all the vids of who bad this trick can be.

thanks for all your replies, from the ones who love it and hate it. I would probably only do it with eggs anyway as I injured my hand once as a carpenter and don't really want to do it again.
