Because we're honest, upright citizens. Also, we haven't got your book yet - just ask again in a week's (cue demonic laughter) !

I'm thoroughly enjoying the book, but my wife refuses to let me try hypnosis on her, and my little boy is only four...

Otherwise, I'm at a loss as to where to practice and on whom. I don't get out much...

:(

Like I said, I don't get out much. I can't remember the last time I was at the pub.

Maybe I'll try hypnotising all the mums at the local playgroup...

I don't think i've ever paid for anything after the third one now i think about it. But I'm already out of money this month. and had thoughts of buying my girlfriend her long awaited ring, but alas, more months must pass; unless i can sort myself out with a couple of decent gigs, all may not be lost yet. Or i might just re-write and re-plus oracle.
Sorry, well off topic now.... so,... hypnotism.....
I met a man last year that claimed he held a record for speed induction; i watched his show which was (for a uni gig) pretty standard, and there was talk that he'd paid a couple of guys off. anyway, had a chat with him after, and even thought i introduced myself as a magician with an interest in hypno he wouldn't even talk to me about it. what a tool! My Jaquin however, was quite ahppy to talk, even though i voiced my sceptical view. nice fella. for some reason i want to buy him a pint! maybe it all does work after all!

Ha, check out Ross Jeffries for that.

Beard, I wish I had gotten this book while my interest in Hypnosis was up. I spent a hell-load on hypnotism texts: Patterns of Milton H Erickson MD Vol 1, The Structure of Magic Vol 1, Monsters and Magical Sticks: There's No Such Thing As Hypnosis, and Hypnotherapy by David Elman (which I could never be bothered reading through, though I heard it's fantastic).

After all this, the only time I was successfully able to utilize suggestion was after applying techniques from Luke Jermay's Building Blocks, and the success rate was rather low, and I ended up looking like a tool. Though I DID get a coin to burn a couple of friend's hands. That was cool.

Beard, have you had any experience with any of these other books? Were you able to get anything practical from them?

Hypnosis Books

Postby Jacquin » Oct 2nd, '08, 09:43

Hi Adrian,

You have read some good books.

By far the one I value the most out of those on your list is Patterns 1. With the exception of Elman most of your other books are on the Ericksonian language pattern/Milton Model/NLP side of things. I love this stuff and it was also the entry point into hypnosis for me. However that was with reference to therapy. Then using it in mentalism inspired by e.g Jermay/ Knepper/ Enriquez.

Although their is a lot of fluff on the NLP side of things their is a small percentage of it that is extremely effective and is good for anyone to master especially hypnotists. Read Patterns 1 for years like you would 13 Steps or Tarbell. You will always find something of value in there. REading Trance-formations would help put all the other stuff into a decent practical context. So would Training Trances.

My book is much more about practical direct techniques that you can easily use in almost any setting. It is almost devoid of any fancy language patterns :( I have attempted to provide a structure to the approach based on what works for me and those I have trained. It involves a Set Up and what I refer to as a Set Piece prior to Induction. All of the inductions in the book are rapid meaning they take from a few seconds to a minute to execute. Most result in arm catalepsy a useful point of leverage. From there I outline word for word with explanation half a dozen routines I have done for odd impromptu reasons or do regularly as part of my impromptu act.

With regard to getting started in hypnosis rather than deeper into theory it is not necessary that you master this more complex stuff first. Using simple direct language works fine. More complex does not mean more advanced. The best hypnotists I know keep it simple. I am sure most of them can also drone on like Erickson, stack metaphors, be indirect, use double binds, complex equivalents, conversational postulates and much more. However what matters much more is the attitude and intention the hypnotist has when he or she speaks to their subject. So say it, mean it.

Fear of looking a dork will sadly often prevent people becoming hypnotists and many other things too. Just remind yourself. It's not you, it's them. Prepare yourself for the possibility of it going well.

Thanks for letting me know.

The race is on then. Mandrake. MaterCyde. First one to become invisible or steal a watch is the winner.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Some questions to those that have bought the book so far: I know from reading up on this on this and other forums that there were 2 additional supplements aimed at magicians / mentalists: are these actual physical supplements as opposed to an emailed electronic document? There's been reference of the supplements being emailed to people as an afterthought / post purchase, but no reference to whether the supplements are actually printed. Nit picking, I know, but I much prefer to read from an actual page as opposed to from a screen (i like to be horizontal when I read, you see). So, if I were to purchase this would the supplements be sent with the book or just simply emailed? Finally, for those that recently purchased the book: was the separate DVD included as well? Whilst these small details may seem innocuous, to me they're quite important as I'm trying to justify this purchase...

Feeling less like a newbie these days and more of a novice, I am currently getting deeper into magic and am fascinated by reading up on theory and presentation and anticipate that mentalism will be the next avenue. Whilst I had no initial interrest in hypnotism whatsoever, this thread has aroused interest, as it seems truly fascinating. I'm still very much on the fence as for me it's an expensive purchase, and some reviews advise at least some formal training. I was also considering buying Paul Brook's Alchemical Tools too, so this has thrown a spanner in the works. It's really one or the other. Bearing in mind I know absolutely nothing about hypnotism, but am a quick learner and like to believe I'm a wordsmith quick on my feet, would this benefit me?

Rufio,

let me clarify.

There is currently only one supplement. The second one is finished but I am awaiting clearance on a reference. The book is a paper book. All supplements are emailed as PDF's. They are only short 10-15 pages.

The DVD-R was sent with the first two hundred with a view to getting the video product properly produced so it is easier to navigate etc. This project has not been completed so I send out the disk with the book but do not announce that it is available overtly on my website.

So if you order the book you will get the DVD. As a magician you will get the supplements.

Alchemical Tools is great :) I had the good fortune to meet it's author earlier in the year. Great thinker. Generous spirit. If your mind is on mentalism and developing your character and presentation then get it.
