Problemwithfasttalking...

Postby Michael Kras » Sep 21st, '08, 17:34

Hello Everyone,

I've have had a few problems while in performance. Sometimes, I have the tendency to speak at unheard of speeds. The articulation is there and to me, the words coming out of my mouth sound comprehensible. However I am still sometimes asked to slow down.

My problem is, sometimes I know I'm speaking far too quickly and try to stop... but for some reason, cannot seem to stop. Do you have any tips or help as to what I could possibly do to slow my speech down?

Thank you for your help,

Michael

develop a stutter...

or - when you script out each effect, build in a little question to give a natural stop/start to the peformance...

so, you're kinda forcing yourself to slow down and listen more than anything else...

other than that...trim down your script so you HAVE to take your time, otherwise each effect will last less then ten seconds...

Thank you for your suggestions! I also think it may be the audiences I perform for. A lot of my performances happen within my high school and since my presentations are normally pretty well-thought-out and long, I try to speak quickly so I can just get to what they want to see... the magic.

well, if your presentations are pretty long - maybe the fast talking is kinda suggesting that they're tooooooooooooo long? And subconciously you are either:

rushing through all the script to "get to the magic" - in which case, trim the patter...or

you're too caught up in the showing of the magic bit - and rather than make sure the participants are understanding what you are doing, or why you are doing something - you rush and maybe loose a little from the overall effect?

i personally bullet-point my effects script wise...just to make sure i am absolutely clear in what i want them to experience and share...

tell them what you want to do, how and then do it...

Thank you! I suppose it would be useful for me to have numerous presentations for the effects in my repertoire.... one for my formal shows and others for walkaround.

Have you thought about joining a speakers club?
They deal with presentaion of speech and will probably help with slowing things down?
