magic at school

I suppose this is mainly a topic for younger members, but I hope others will contribute as well.
I'm a sophmore in highschool and am constantly being called on by friends and others (just students who heard about a kid that does magic) to do a trick. By always carrying cards with me, I ensure I'm never caught offguard, but still I thought it would be helpful to other highschool magicians as well as myself to start this thread. :D

It doesn't apply to students only. I'm a trainer at work and we have about 2,000 employees. Most of them knows me or knows that I perform magic.

You just have to know when to turn down a request and save it for a better time. Don't let yourself be placed in position when you're not fully prepared for the effect or when you're totally off guard. Also you would only do specifc requests when you know 100% you can perform it, if not...you could always find ways to turn them down. One way is to perform a trick they don't know yet.

Every day... I pretty much cannot go anywhere without cards. Not a problem because I take cards everywhere anyways. But I'm asked to show an effect at least twice daily. I always bring a deck of cards, my half dollars, and another effect or two.

Get yourself a copy of Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic".

I did and it sits on my shelf :) one day I'll get around to reading it and learning some coin sleights

On the note of performing for work colleagues? I never do anything in work at all and never talk about it on works nights out unless someone asks me about it first.

People have asked in work and I've said, nows not the time, but wait until X and I'll spend a little time showing you something I've not shown to anyone as yet. Builds the suspense as well I feel (IB the whole sentence)

I think it is important that you really only show one or two effects when you are asked. That a) leaves them wanting more and b) if you for some reason have to perform magic at some bigger event where some of them are present, they already know your effects respectively it restricts your repertoir to those tricks you didn't show them yet.

I admit I also carry a deck with me all the time

By the way, though I wont reveal how to do it here, I like to use a trick a lot where the spectator selects any card at random and covers it completely on both sides. The magician then tells the spectator the name of the card (both suit and value).

alot of people at school are also wanting me to show them magic. The main problem with me was that they then wanted me to show their friends AND watch it again as well. eventually they got used to my eccentricities ( sorry if i spelt that wrong) and gathered there freinds BEFORE i showed them the trick.

Here I believe it is extremely important that you use different f****s. If you always do a r***le f**** they will eventually figure it out.

"Just me", your solution for the problem is good. I have sometimes found myself in the same situation performing at a party where some people were just following me around all the time saying "Hey, do that one again. That one's amazing!". Eventually I just asked them politely to "get a drink".

You think you have problems? I'm working at an adventure playground working with kids aged 8 to 14 and mostly 'lively children'. I did the crazy mans handcuffs and then later when I showed it to another group of kids while I was trying to build suspense by separating them slowly the one who had seen it before snatched the bands to pull them apart fast.

Thats why I'm currently in jail.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

You stole my "peeing in your pants" sig...
I changed mine to a different one, so it doesn't look like I copied you.

You joined 3 days after me.

I'm deeply dissapointed in you, Clovin. Remember what happened last time I was angry at you?

No, seriously, I think this is a coincidence. It happens more often than one would think.
