Royal road to card magic
Bobos modern Coin magic

both cheap books and will give you enough ungimmicked coin and card magic to keep you busy for a few months

Also the Karl Fulves books - cheap, cheerful and self working!

If you're looking to start out, those books will give you much more for your money than a DVD. Although there is a DVD set to go with Royal Road which always gets good reviews.

Also Have a look at Mark Wilson's Complete Course, another brilliant place to get yourself started. :D

On the dvd front I would heartily recommend "Born to Perform: Oz Pearlman" Dvd. There are only 4 routines explained on the dvd but many of card magics most essential sleights are explained in a very clear and concise manner.
I also would recommend Gerry Griffins "Complete Card Magic" dvd set. Yes, his presentation may seem hokey or dull but the teaching is sound and the learning curve is excellent from the self working, pick up and off you go to the more advanced.
It may also be worth looking into Michael Ammar's "Easy to master" series of dvds too.
Coin on the other hand are not really my thing but if its a dvd your after you are probably best going straight to David roths "expert coin magic" dvd. Might as well learn from one of the best if you can stay awake during his presentations.

As Lady of Mystery says books will give you far more bang for your buck but if you are like me I find learning from them incredibly frustrating. Many a magic book of mine has been thrown across the room when I can't make head nor tail of what the writer is on about.
