terminology please

Postby babkb » Oct 10th, '08, 13:10

I am new to magic and I can't find some of the terminology that I'm looking for. Can anyone tell me what terms can be used to describe the 'voila' moment when the result of the trick is revealed (i.e. the moment when the audience usually gasp)?

I'd agree with Replicant and say, 'reveal'

Welcome to TM. Might be a good idea to introduce yourself in the intro section :D

I'm tempted to say "Prestige" just so people have something to argue about...
...Prestige?

Its usualy reffered to as the revelation, or the climax, or the production, or the finish, or ending.
sometimes, the sting, the effect, ( since all that preceeds it, is the build up to" the effect".

Prestige, is a piece of whimsey created by Christopher Priest for the film and book.I can find no historical background behind that term, and believe me, ive looked.

but , its as good as any.

Be that as it may, I still like that term as well.

I usually use "Ta-daa!" when I'm intentionally displaying the wrong card. :)

I tend to find an incredibly smug smile works best for me. It lets the audience know that I'm smarter and better than them.

In fact, I practise more on the smile than I do on the actual trick. Sometimes it's so convincing, I actually make myself feel bad.

I hope you're joking Crash? That's got to be just about one of the worst things that you can do. Magic isn't about getting one over on you audience or being better than them. It's about entertaining them and making sure that they enjoy your performance and want to come back and see more.

That's how to alienate your audience, right there.

I'm going to assume you're joking/trolling ;)

I was told a story about that final 'Ta Daaa' moment:

Paul Gordon (A friend from the Sussex Circle) once said he was giving a lecture and described the climax of the trick as the 'ta-daaa' moment.

A few months later, Paul saw the man performing, and when he did the trick, and gottothe climax, he actually lifted his hands and (beofre revealing the card) went...TA-DAAAAAAA (as he trnes the card over)

I think any final reveal is ok, justdont come across as a smug git - I find itsbest tooften let them reveal the trick - feel more 'magical'

I guess that came across a tad more serious than I intended.

It's surprisingly hard to add sarcastic intonation in a forum. :D
