How about balancing the 'worst song lyrics' thread in a spirit of positivity...

The following are lyrics that stick in my mind for various reasons:

'I could have been someone'
'Well so could anyone !' - Fairytale of New York - The Pogues
Succinctly heartbreaking.

'The boy who's always mad
He's just alone and sad
He holds my hand so tightly and says go away I'm bad' - I Say Nothing - Voice of the Beehive
Melancholy and meant a lot to me at a particular time in my life

The whole song - If - The Divine Comedy
Kind of sappy but it was 'the song' of my first true love affair

'She said I've heard you and you cannot sing
I said that's nothing, you should hear me play pi-anner' - The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths'
Audaciously bad forced rhyme with the previous line ('spanner'), always makes me smile to myself

'Mister I'm not in a hurry
And I don't want to be like you
And all I want from tomorrow
Is to get it better than today' - Jacob's Ladder - Huey Lewis
Nice 'homespun' sort of sentiment

'And no you can't have my number.. why?... 'cos I lost my phone' - Knock 'Em Out - Lily Allen
Zeitgeisty and amusing. I have a soft spot for lyrics that make me laugh.

Nothing very profound there but the first ones that come to mind.

Yes, a real oldie but annually seasonal (Xmas) and damn good:

From Good King Wenceslas -

"Therefore Christian men be sure, wealth or rank possessing, ye who now shall bless the poor, shall yourselves, find blessing"

My signature has some of my favorite song lyrics.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Jeff Buckley's Lover You Should Have Come Over has some utterly gorgeous lyrics: "Broken down and hungry for your love with no way to feed it"

I'm also pretty pleased with my own lyrics:

Mama told me not to mix the grape and grain
I am that wasp caught against the window pain

From my own song "Bored Of Sandwiches"

Empty Chair:
"I feel the trembling tingle of a sleepless night
Creep through my fingers and the moon is bright
Beams of blue come flickering through my window pane
Like gypsy moths that dance around a candle flame

And I wonder if you know
That I never understood
That although you said you'd go
Until you did I never thought you would"

Above the clouds:
"Above the clouds, what's to be found,
I have to wonder - Will I be around.
As my anger shouts - At my own self doubt,
So a madness creeps - Into my dreams
When you're scared of living - But afraid to die
I get scared of giving - And I must find the faith to beat it

I must be me that's rushing by,
Time just lingers on the wind.
Bristlin' through my open fears,
I wonder what it's going to bring."

These arms of mine:
"These arms of mine, they are lonely,
Lonely and feeling blue.

These arms of mine, they are yearning,
Yearning from wanting you.

And if you would let them hold you,
Oh how grateful I will be."

Powder blue:
I'm proud to be the one you hold when the shakes begin
Sallow skinned, starry eyed, blessed
In our sin
Bring that minute back
We never get so close to death
Makes you so alive
I share it all with you
Powder blue

The ladders of life we scale merrily
Move mysteriously around
So that when you think you're climbing up
In fact you're climbing down

- Nick Cave

God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers
And God don't care for your benevolence
Anymore than He cares for the lack of it in others
Nor does He care for you to sit at windows in judgement of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you; ugly, useless and over-inflated

- Nick Cave

I am made from the dust of the stars
And the oceans flow in my veins
Here I hide in the heart of the city
Like a stranger coming out of the rain

The evening plane rises up from the runway
Over constellations of light
I look down into a million houses
And wonder what you're doing tonight

If I could wave my magic wand
I'd make everything all right

I'm not one to believe in magic
But I sometimes have a second sight
I'm not one with a sense of proportion
When my heart still changes overnight

I had a dream of a winter garden
A midnight rendezvous
Silver, blue and frozen silence
What a fool I was for you

I had a dream of the open water
I was swimming away out to sea
So deep I could never touch bottom
What a fool I used to be

If I could wave my magic wand
I'd set everybody free

I'm not one to believe in magic
Though my memory has a second sight
I'm not one to go pointing my finger
When I radiate more heat than light

Don't ask me
I'm just improvising
My illusion of careless flight
Can't you see
My temperature's rising
I radiate more heat than light

Don't ask me
I'm just sympathizing
My illusions a harmless flight
Can't you see
My temperature's rising
I radiate more heat than light

Rush - Presto

Small Yellow Chair by Leatherface.
These two lines tell you all you need to know about the song. If you don't know what it's about, you've never been there:

The first time that you laughed I could have cried
Laugh at me any time

Nice thread misterblack,

Being a staunch C&W fan all my life there are many lyrics I could say are/were my favourites, although I have to say that I feel everyones favourites change periodically, mine certainly have over the years.

My current favourite is 'The Pilgrim' by Kristofferson whom I saw a few months back, and am just getting into this one (Its a fairly new one).

The opening lines are,
See him wasted on the sidewalk, in his jacket and his jeans,
Wearing yesterdays misfortunes like a smile,
Once he had a future full of money, love and dreams,
Which he spent like they were going outa style.

Sheer class 8)

Although I'm a country fan through and through, I have to admit that the 'Bat Out of Hell' lyrics are awsome. That is one that occasionally tests the sound system in the car to its extreem

Down in the Tubestation at Midnight by the Jam, circa 1979. It's long so most of you will just scroll past, but those of you who actually read it will be rewarded with the greatest song lyric known to man ever.

The distant echo of faraway voices boarding faraway trains,
To take them home to the ones that they love and who love them forever.
The glazed, dirty steps repeat my own and reflect my thoughts
Cold and uninviting, partially naked
Except for toffee wrapers and this morning's paper - "Mr. Jones Got Run Down"
Headlines of death and sorrow - they tell of tomorrow - "Madmen on the Rampage!"
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight.

I fumble for change and pull out the queen, smiling, beguiling.
I put in the money and pull out a plum.
Behind me
Whispers in the shadows - gruff blazing voices
Hating, waiting
"Hey boy!" they shout. "Have you got any money?"
And I said, "I've a little money and a take away curry,
I'm on my way home to my wife.
She'll be lining up the cutlery, you know shes expecting me,
Polishing the glasses and pulling out the cork."
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight

I first felt a fist, and then a kick, I could now smell their breath.
They smelt of pubs and wormwood scrubs and too many right wing meetings.
My life swam around me, it took a look and drowned me in its own existence.
The smell of brown leather, it blended in with the weather
It filled my eyes, ears, nose and mouth
It blocked all my senses
Couldn't see, hear, speak any longer
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight
I said I was down in the tube station at midnight

The last thing that I saw as I lay there on the floor
Was "jesus saves" painted by an atheist nutter
And a British Rail poster read "Have an Awayday - a Cheap Holiday - Do it Today!"
I glanced back on my life and thought about my wife
because they took the keys - and she'll think its me.

And I'm down in the tube station at midnight.
The wine will be flat and the curry's gone cold.
