Here is a moral issue.

Is it ok to borrow a magic DVD? I must admit I've done it. However technically it is breaking copy right.

Do we therefore think this shouldn't be done,if we think it's ok, then how about copying that DVD. If we copy it, can we then loan the copied DVD etc.

Basically where do you draw the line and why?

No harm in borrowing - you can borrow things from the Library so it's legal. Copying isn't legal. Having said that, it's up to your own sense of morality but, officially, you shouldn't copy anything which is copyright. And I'm sure you wouldn't even think about it!

Most magic societies in this country (and I assume others) have extensive libraries of Magic Videos and DVD's that can be borrowed by members.

Dunno Mandrake, I've often copied a programme from TV and then loaned it to a friend or vice versa. This is breaking copy right are you therefore saying you wouldn't do this and I shouldn't?

Or how about this situation, I copy my own DVD and loan out the copied one just in case it gets lost or damaged. This does break copyright but do or would we do it?

Technically you can record a TV programme for youself for later viewing and are supposed to wipe the tape immediately afterwards. Lending/passing it on to a friend is probably not legal but is so common that it's probably not something the powers that be would do anything about. If money changes hands then they'll probably have somebody's guts for garters! I wonder if it's the same if you buy a newspaper, read it, and then pass it on to someone else. Or if you go and buy fish & chips and read the newspaper it was wrapped up in (OK, I know Chippys don't use newspaper these days but I'm being provocative!).

It's a good question where the legal answer is probably never enforced. Thanks goodness ( )!

PS When software came on Floppy discs, the first thing we were advised to do was make a back up copy, put the original in a safe place and use the copy.

With CD ROM's etc it seems as though you shouldn't copy them at all. So I guess it's the same with DVDs.

Yeah so my question is not so much what does the copy right law say as my guess is that most of us break the copy right law either by accident or design, my question is that since we break the code when we for example borrow a copied film from the TV ( of course you may be the exception that won't even do this ) then where do you draw the line and why?

Same as when we go over the speed limit 'just a little bit'. It's not right but we all do it. I think I need to go to Confession now - CU later!

I think by law you are permitted to do a single back up copy as long as you destroy the backup as soon as you sold the original.
I dont want to buy my 5 year old son a dvd and he sits on it and break it.
