EXPOSURE?

Postby Peter Marucci » Oct 30th, '08, 13:31

I was just browsing through the clips on You Tube, Facebook, etc. and saw dozens of clips of kids offering "tutorials", which seems to be a fancy way of saying "exposure", since all they did was show how various tricks are done.

So what?

The one thing that all these kids have in common is that they are HORRIBLE PERFORMERS :!:

No doubt there will be an outcry over this "exposure".

Better there should be an outcry over how bad these performances are!

cheers,

He he. I agree.

Someone on the Magic Cafe recently pointed out the number of people with access to the Web, the number of "tutorial" videos posted as a fraction of the total on YouTube and elsewhere, and showed that the likelihood of people searching for and watching them is very low indeed.

Thinking on, isn't it more likely that cheapskate performers will be the ones watching them? Given the sometimes dreadful technique being taught, anyone who uses them as a way of bypassing the need to part with cash only has themselves to blame when they fail to create anything but boredom because they're also bypassing all the extra knowledge and tips contained within the original product.

They've clogged up youtube with exposure of the same tricks copying Blaine, etc that in their own way they've done a stellar job of preventing exposure. Anyone looking for specific tricks would have to filter through so much crud they'd give up before they found what they were looking for. I'm sure there are some proper dvds that should be taken down, but on the whole most of these clips are hilarious.

Plus you have to laugh at the kids who would buy this.

I don't think this is an issue for any serious performer to be concerned about. After all, children will be children; I say let them carry on with their games if it puts a smile on their little faces. Bless 'em.

Speaking from experience there?

Yoofpube vids are utterly hilarious at times and do a far better job of concealing the real methods so bring 'em on, let's have more of the same! In fact, we've suggested before now that we should post fake tutorials just to add to the confusion but I reckon those out there already are doing a far better job than we can!

Just to add to this, whilst browsing the internet looking for supplies, I got a nice link of google,

"the card in the middle to the top - tutorial" at least they are giving correct names to everything helping with maximum exposure!

I have seen a few of the so called tutorials as we all will of at some point, and all I can say is I feel sorry for those that attempt to learn from these videos although saying that a lot can be considered as how not to perform.

Hmm. I know that if we're being serious, the risk/damage to magic from these things is pretty low, but whenever I run into them (for the record - when searching for full performances of tricks!) they still make me angry, and I've been known to post harsh messages to the creators.

It's the half-arsed way things are revealed that kind of bugs me - like someone carelessly spoiling a book or a film for you, when the author or film maker has put much time and effort into getting it just right. It shows a total lack of respect for the creator and as such - however bad it may or may not be for magic in general - the perpetrators deserve a kicking.
