I'm coming into this conversation late, but here's one thing I don't get.

The topic is "ignorant American questions", and you're asking for the definition of chuff.

I've never heard anyone, anywhere in the US use the word chuff at any time. I haven't been to every state in the union (28), but I haven't heard it in any major city anywhere.

I know there's a few US citizens on here. Has anyone else ever heard the word chuff used in common parlance?

That would be because having cacky pants would be quite embarrasing!

Demitri, I think you've got it the wrong way round; it was a question being posed by and "ignorant American" about UK English.

Demitri - i believe he was just asking it as "i think i may be a bit silly asking for the explanations of these brit words because I'm an American"..rather than anything else.

I think you should start a trend, and spread your chuff throughout America. Pillock would be another unheard of word in the States that you could bandy around without fear of verbal attacks. :D

You're a smart guy - I'm sure you know the origins of the word "berk" too.

That's an alarming piece of Cockney slang, innit?

Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

And of course in the UK a mentalist is not a mind-reading magician. He is, well, somebody who's mental.

To quote Alan Partridge: "You're a bloody mentalist!"

Wow, completely misunderstood the entire topic of the thread. Allow me the opportunity to hide my red face in shame and quickly bow out of the conversation...

Do not hide! Embrace our collective chuffs!

Or the Sweeney will come getcha.

To try and raise the level above pillocks and chuffs - the reason why the slang for your bottom is 'arris, is thus:

Aristotle = bottle, bottle and glass = a**e

A**e = ass in American slang.
