Hiya,

someone showed me a routing the other day, a sort of ambitious card but not quite.
For the first part I signed a card which went back into the deck and was then revealed by getting it to fly out of the deck in a spin.
It was a normal deck, can anyone point me in the direction of where I can learn this and what is the name of the effect.

Not sure about the effect, but the card spin sounds like it could be Daryl's Hot Shot Cut. You can learn this in Oz Pearlman's Born to Perform Card Magic DVD, which is rather good.

Tehre are a few different handlings of the Hot Shot Cut.

The one on the Ellusionist DVD mentioned isnt quite the same as Daryls own handling, which cna be found on one of his Encyclopedia of card slights DVD.s

Paul Harris also has oen is one of the Art Of Astonishment DVD's.

This is something I'm trying to master at the moment.

One piece of advice I was given, and am trying to follow, is to take it in stages. first try to master the basic cut, then try to master getting the card to poke out, then try to master getting it to spin out. I can now do the cutting part OK, and am making headway on the second stage.

Prepare to spend some time practising!

Looks good when you get it down though, its worth the hours.

Its only impressive the first time you see it. after the millionth wannabe shows you it, it gets brain numbingly dull.

learn it if you must, but not at the expense of being entertaining.

I have to agree with dale here. When I first started out I had my knickers in a twist over it thinking it was the best thing I'd ever seen.

In truth, it's very rarely used well.

The best use of the move is when it's built up beforehand in your patter to make it seem impossible - for instance if you say:

"If I were to just find the card you're thinking of that would be mildly impressive, but what if I were to estimate its position in the deck? What if I were to estimate its position in the deck and cut directly to it? What if I were to cut directly to it one handed?! What if I were to estimate it's position, cut directly to it with one hand, and then make it somersault out of the deck and catch it in mid air?!"

Obviously you say this as though you're just going a bit nuts and the spec is like "Yeah, right... that would be mental" - and then you do the move.

I'd imagine that most spectators will not have seen it before, but other magicians will have Magicians Fatigue from the move.

Isn't this move orginally Lennart Green's?

Might it be something other than a hot shot cut?
What's the definitive work on card flicking/scaling anyway? I learnt from the Art of Card Manipulation series but surely it's more in depth somewhere...

I have the card jump out of the deck however it is not in the process of cutting the cards. I usually tell the spectator there card is going to jump out of the deck make 112.2 revolutions in the air, almost hitting the ceiling and then land in my awaiting left hand. It gets a great reaction and while the magicians have seen it a hundred thousand times the lay audience have not. It is like that with card effects in general. Magicians have seen them a hundred times and they (non working magicians anyway) assume that the lay audience feels the same way about them as we do, when in fact most spectators love a good card trick.

theres a move like that on Greg Wilson's Card Stunts DVD but im not brave enough to attempt it yet!

The boomerang card of death is from Greg wilson's Card stunts, and it's brilliant. I have a version of a flick out move and a topshot on my DVD Urban. Rick Smith Jnr has a few. There are alot out there...I just can't think of anymore

There is also a move on David Stones DVD "Real Secrets of Magic" (I dont remember 1 or 2), where the card jumps out while youre shuffling the cards.
