When people ask what I do, some respond by saying things like "I'm a writer too!". If I ask who they write for and what the rates are like, the reply is usually something like: "Oh, I've not been published yet." or even worse, "Oh, I've never been paid." So far, I've bumped into exactly one other fellow writer and a few who are doing something about getting a career off the ground, but I've also met plenty of "writers".

Ah, here's the waiter with my coat.

I am a Health and Safety Manager but never tell anyone now what I do because I get the usual "You cancelled this, that and the other - killjoys"

I usually say Risk Manager - then watch them walk away with a complete look of boredom.

I don't mention it, although I can't see "Magician" ranking much lower on the scale than "IT Analyst."

Years ago a mate of mine joined the Royal Navy as a Ship's Writer which was Navy speak for a clerical job. When asked what his job was he told them and when they asked what he actually did he said that in rough weather when the ship was rocking from side to side, he and 199 other 'Ship's Righters' had to rush to the opposite side of the ship and make sure it stayed 'right' in the water. A lot of people actually believed him!

You wouldn't say that if I started explaining my research. Unless you're having trouble sleeping of course.
