Springing Cards

Postby GaryGrace » Nov 12th, '08, 23:56

I've just had the big breakthrough and feel more of a magician already- silly I know, but it's strange how the little things make such a big difference to one's self belief.

I agree, i don't actually remember how long i've been into magic and mentalism - 8 years? maybe?

anyway - i only learnt how to spring cards about 3 years ago...i still can't fan to save my life, or shave my wife...if i had a wife...

and maybe about the same timescale for an in the hands riffle and waterfall...

i think that's why i stick mainly to mentalism...

good fun though eh... :D

Card spring was the first showoff sleight that I learned. Then a fan which, like Iain, I can't do.

Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

I don't spring cards, I just dribble them with gusto.

I'd love to be able to do an in hand riffle and waterfall. I do keep trying, but my waterfall is more like a little dribble.

I can however cut one handed! 8)

Cards eh? I find the dead are far more co-operative.

BTW Don't you just hate it when you give the cards to a spec to shuffle and he/she riffles and waterfalls? I don't know why but it annoys me. Probably because I can't do it.

Do you mean one-handed? If not, I was doing this the first day I started playing with cards. I guess the strength and dexterity gained from playing guitar has helped greatly in my card work.

I find dribbling a far more pleasing flourish but springing seems to be expected by people. I've had maybe a dozen people ask if I can do it and they all seemed dissapointed when I said no - regardless of what tricks I had just performed for them.

I'm rubbish at any type of fancy pants card stuff. When I first started I tried to learn it but then just thought, what's the point and it gave up for things I thought would be more useful.

I've got a warm glow now, you guys have made me feel rather good with a deck.

And im with you Gary, playing guitar for 12 years before i started playing with cards did no harm at all.

An easy one hand fan is the Carnahan fan. PM me if you want details, i'll do my best to describe it.

Hmmm.... Since doing magic a year ago, things just seem so easy and even in the first few weeks I seemed to very naturally adapt to flourishes. Within a few hours of practice I was able to do a thumb fan, spring cards, etc. It took a few more hours to do the stuff that Caps Casino does, although a year on whilst I'm adept at doing Cybil cuts, The Bridge cut, etc., I still can't seem to do a pressure fan. As with Grimshaw, I've been playing guitar for about 13 years now, and I think that made it all flow very quickly. 2 other magician friends were musicians before doing magic, and I think there's definitely a correlation between music ability and magic.
