Best torn and restored Card....!?

Postby trickster080 » Nov 14th, '08, 10:52

I know this will be opinionated, but please will you name one? I don't care where it's impromptu (but it will be a plus) or gimmick, Or whether it for
advance or beginner magician. As long as the thing is effective among spectators ( they are crazy as hell!!!).

The one I use is kind of a throw away effect at the end of a transposition.

I get them to pick a card, pop it in the middle of the deck, I attempt to make it jump to the top but fail. I tear the card up as it is wrong. I ask them their actual card, find it in the deck, wave it above the torn card & show that the two have changed places. I then get them to tear each torn piece in half leaving 8 pieces. They hold onto them while I explain that the person next to them will make a prediction on which piece they'll take out & hold up. When they try to take one piece out, they find it is restored.

I've been doing it for years but only recently put it back in my act because it got big reactions with friends. Can't for the life of me remember which book it's in though, I'm at work at the moment so can't check.

I use the one in Mark Wilson's book, it's very very simple but always goes down really well.

Here here Lady Of Mystery, despite all the flashy ones i've learned recently, Mr Wilsons outshines them all.

I still will always argue for Daniel Garcia's "Torn" it's highly visual and the spec gets to keep their signed restored card afterwards.

I dont perform torn often but someone i do shows with uses this alot, i really do think its the most visual and best version that there is out there, thats also not too difficult to do.

Whenever i see it i have to watch it just looks so good.

Daniel Garcia's torn is good, and although I am not performing the effect at the moment, or have done for some time, I like Tommy Wonder's version (I like the guy's way of thinking). I used to have the effect on video. It was one of his lectures, with some nice ideas and great for those with a bad case of the 'Blue Peter, let's make it' syndrome. Why not try to make your own? I watched an effect on t.v. a long time ago, which I had to work out a method to. I came up with a version, and still perform it today. I even printed instructions, and packaged about 100 of these, but decided not to release it, due to the amount of other effects, similar to this one, that are out there. The thing is, my version is good enough for me, and I'd like to think tha my standards are high, and I still use it.
You never know what your mind might throw out, when you throw stuff in there. For an idea, how about having a duplicate card, which you scribble across the face of? Hope I've said enough there, or have I said too much?? If you give them a piece of the torn card to hold......... Okay, I've said too much, already - lol. All the best with the restoration quest.

If anybodys seen my prefered torn and resored card,( via Kenton K) Im sure that they would agree that for impromptu effects, its just about the best. Im almost always ready to go, as i can do it with train tickets, postcards, and beer mats just as well as playing cards. :)

Sam cross has seen me do it. In fact if i recall, he was there at a bar-b-q round D,k's when i learned it.

Its been a life saver many, many times.

If you're looking for an advanced version you could check out Dani DaOrtiz's TNR Matrix - I've not bought it as I can tell from watching the performance it's not for me, but it sure looks awesome.

Depends what you think is good, Trickster.

If you think that "piece by piece restoration with a kicker finish", that looks amazing... from the front, ideally to a webcam and the youtube population, but takes hours of fiddling in your bedroom to make each gimmick... is good, then take your pick, there are frickin' loads.

Personally, as soon as the craft knifes, pieces of latex and the phrase "duplicate signature" appear, I turn away.

My idea of a good T&R is: largely angle proof, as impromptu as possible, clean to hand out at the end, can be signed... in other words, workable.

As such, pretty much the only one I use is from Harry Robson's DVD, "Magic Under Fire". No set up, no force, just uses two cards, and the spec gets a piece to "fit" into the (mostly) restored card to prove it's the same one, which is always a really nice moment. Bonza.

I've got both Torn and Torn Too, and sadly despite Torn Too being quick and simple, Torn is far better as people see all of the pieces separate. However, on the few that have seen me attempt Torn, they all have started to try and work it out and have come pretty close, and that's partly thanks to the heavily creased card you are handing back to them. Tried it again with some other people but doing the trick twice, by "showing" how it's done in a way demonstrated by a Youtuber (does not spoil the trick itself), probably better shown than explained... Ignore the bad choice of music... and no-one bothered to try and explain it thanks to the "reveal"...

Torn is a beauty, Holy Grail is pointless and I haven't got Cameron Francis' Rehab so i cannot comment.

I actually think this is the best http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3H8mgU807_E

Danny based Torn on this but i still think the original is better on angles and handling.

In my opinion the best one I have seen is TNR by Matheiu Bich.
