forum not what it used to be?

Postby alter28 » Nov 15th, '08, 17:37

Hey,

Ive recently joined this forum again and ive noticed its virtually dead compared to what it was a year or so ago... what has happened?

Anyone got any ideas about how to get the forum more active?

Also how come everyone seems to be mentalists now instead of magicians? Derren Browns popularity must have something to do with it right?

I guess i see no reason why you cant be both a mentalist and a magician. Infact it may just enhance your act and make you more suitable to perform for adults if you dont have to label yourself a magician. Im sure some of you know some peoples attitudes towards "magic".

Regards,
Alter

I find it odd that you'd say that. I check this forum twice and a day and there are always new posts and active conversations.. usually well over a dozen.

Forums do cycle when it comes to activity and if you look closely, the time of year affects how busy they are. Some of the private forums I'm involved in virtually dry up for months at a time because they deal with working pros who are not able to get on line because of work schedules, be it the college circuit or end of year convention season. I'm certain that similar things affect who can post and participate in things around here as well, though to a lesser degree in that we have fewer full time professionals involved with TM.

If you are looking for volume of posts vs. quality, I'd suggest the Cafe being your best bet. If however, you want some honest conversations that you can actually learn from, stick around and be patient

That is odd. I find this forum more active than most.

I beg to differ. There's always something going on at TM and I log in at least once a day. However, it's true that most forums go through quiet patches, like Craig mentioned. But I would never describe TM as "virtually dead".

Virtually dead might have been an over exaggeration on my part. I just remember it been a lot busier in the past. Way more posts and active members.

Who are you mark lewis? Ive seen you around the forum, apparently your an expert in everything from childrens magic to hypnotherapy / nuclear physics.

Been a member here a few years now and it's never been more active. Of course there are peaks and troughs, but in general I'd say TM was in a healthy state.

BTW alter28, you don't know magicmindben do you? It's just my spider sense is tingling, and what with me being psychic and all...well, call it a hunch.

As a fellow psychic I agree with Paul.

However I will assume for the moment that the enquirer has made an innocent enquiry until he proves otherwise. Out of courtesy I must respond to him. And of course I am renowned for my courtesy.

It is indeed correct that I do know everything. How astute of you to notice. I am the world's greatest svengali pitchman, the world's greatest psychic consultant (except for Paul of course), the world's greatest hypnotist, the world's greatest card magician and finally the world's greatest children's entertainer.

I will confess however to not knowing much about nuclear physics. I must be honest about this since I am a paragon of modesty.

I do hope that answers your question.

I can honestly say i have no idea who magicmindben is

Altho feel free to enlighten me on the situation with said ben

I am from the same city as you tho Paul but have never seen you perform. Do you go in that shop with the man with the beard (Russell, i think) ermmm Magick?

As for you Mr Lewis... i know nothing about nuclear physics either, but i shall do one day, i know this to be true because i had a dream of running my own nuclear power plant 8) it must be true

if you don't like how forums are run - then the bottom line is..leave!

i do it occassionally - and will do again shortly...

no big deal really; these places are privately owned - its not here just for the individual as such, but it is here for anyone who wishes to use it, for free, if you wish to abide by the site owners rules.

If you don't, or feel that there is a bias - log out.

Hmmm... I don't know this ben character well, but given the immaturity level and inability to speak/type proper English, I do believe you (you too Mark) may be onto something. I'm feeling a rather distinctive yanking upon my chain here.

That's a rather sweeping statement. Sure Derren's popularity will have made many newbies want to be mentalists and yes he has done the arena of mentalism a lot of good by boosting its popularity but also a modicum of harm - one of the side effects of being so successful. By being so successful there is a massive influx of Brown wannabes this is true but those Brown can-be's (to coin a phrase) are few and far between.

Beyond this regarding the forum. As someone whos ISP only allows me short term visits at a time (a long story) I find the forum is fairly active. There are always new topics every time I visit even if this is 3 or 4 times in a day - hardly dead.

Its eerie he even talks like memorire (note the ermm's).
Of course we're probably being suspicious because a name like alter implies alter ego. Doesn't actually prove anything.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Wow Jean, what an insight...everybody who disagrees with louis is now a potential alter ego of mine huh? i believe you think i care that much about the matter. yes im pis*ed off at some things but i can say it for myself and dont need fake users to defend my oppinion :) (and i say it in the respective threads). Believe me im not that far out to make an alter ego to prove something on an online forum ;)

best regards

Don't tell anyone, but I'm actually Mandrake, wizards robes and all. I use the name 'kolm' when I want to crack bad jokes. Don't tell the mods.

I thought Mandrake used the name Mandrake when he wanted to crack bad jokes?
