I was on a night out with some friends and started doing magic in the outside area where there were tables, seating and patio heaters. After a few minutes there was a gathering of about 5 other people and eventually there must have been about 20 to 25 or so people huddled around in the smoking area just watching and shouting with rowdy enthusisasm. After several card effects one stranger happened to have taken his friend's mobile (unawares) and secretly passed it me. With some flash paper I produced it to the utter bafflement of his friend who must have thought I was a talented pick pocket. That was a great reaction. However, what followed next completely shocked me, as one of the guys handed me £20. I declined, but they kept insisting. Then his girlfriend, confided in me: "Don't tell him I gave you this..." and handed me a tenner. I kept refusing as I felt a bit guilty taking people's money, but in the end I pocketed £36 and a handful of change. I was asked if I was available to do a magic gig at one of the group's wedding some 4 months ahead, but professed to just being a hobbyist, although did pass on my number. Part of my refusal was to do with a fear of not being ready, but i regret it now as it could have been my first (proper) paid gig. It did plant this notion of possibly obtaining the occasional paid gig, but it's a bit of a leap of faith to get to that stage, as it's one thing performing magic on a night out and another to be at an event (or so I reckon). I'll never forget that time, and for it to happen with my friends around as well chanting my nickname was, whilst an ego boost, rather fetching. Incidentally, if anyone has ever seen the film Hook by Stephen Spielberg, where there is an Oriental character called Rufio who initially challenged Peter Pan's authority and there is that scene where a horde of youths chant his name. Well, that's what it was like. Priceless.
