Visit to the UK

Postby aware » Nov 23rd, '08, 16:01

Hi everyone,

I am based in Europe and plan to visit the UK for maybe 1 month in the near future - as a big break to my stressful business life. Since this forum is a UK one, I would like to kindly ask you which place do you recommend that fulfills the following "magic" criteria:

a) Place where there is lot's of magic, like communities that gather and will to share
b) Place that lot's of magic is happening at shows, bars, restaurants etc
c) Place where I could perform for free some walk-around routines of magic/mental magic nature

Looking forward to your insight,

Best rgds

Where in the UK? It's a big place you know.

At last, some people said something!!! Thanks for that.

Well, any place in the UK. I just want too see and experience informal magic performances (bars etc) but some magic shows (if any) would be a nice addon.

Thanks again and please continue sending replies with your thoughts,

Isn't there a bar in Bristol which encourages ad hoc performances form visiting magicians? I can't remember exactly where but a bit of Searching on TM might find the thread from earlier this year.

Well as greedoniz said there are T.M meets all over the U.K (Look under regional meetings in the index). And if you want to perform for free, most pubs and bars will let you, as for street performing, I don't know what the rules are outside of England but you will need to get a busking license from the local council.

But really you should say where your going, the information you've got so far will be useless if you end up in Scotland.

http://www.illusionsmagicbar.co.uk/location.htm is the one you want. I know Clifton (used to live by the Hop House where the Clifton Arcade is) and the Waterfront has changed dramatcially since my Bristol days, but it looks as if it's near that Bath Store on the Triangle. Never been, but it sounds cool. I heard Manchester had an equivalent a while ago but it closed down.

Thanks guys, i'll be sure to trot along and check it out.

I never know how to react when someone tries magic on me though, do i go cocky and say ' BEFORE YOU START, i may well know how you do this '.
Or do i smile inanely and just go with it?

There's a girl in Bath who sets up a table on the street and does card tricks, and as much as i'd like to go over and see her chops, i also don't want to look unimpressed or pretend to act impressed and ruin it by saying something daft.

It's tough being me you know.

The illsuions bar at Bristol is a very nice recommendation - many thanks for that!

However, it seems strange that only one of this kind in the whole UK....

And I say so, because from your kind responses until now there seems not to be any other (you stay in UK, you love/perform magic so you know much...)

There have been a few other bars in the UK where the something similar was arranged but they seem to have gone out of business - not necessarily because of the magic but through business problems, lack of cash and so on. Places like TGI Fridays used to have strolling magicians but they were hired by the restaurant rather than being a place for strangers to walk in and perform. The Regional Meetings are probably the best opportunity to do your stuff impromptu - a sudden outbreak of magic is expected at such events!
