Some Techy Help

Postby Grimshaw » Nov 25th, '08, 13:09

If anyone's a genius on computers here please help me out with this.

I have a 1Gb file on this here PC at work, i need to get it to my PC at home. Sending it by email is not an option is it, sadly the PC here at work has no DVD Writer, only a CD one. It wont fit on a CD-R since they're limited to 700 MB or summat like that.

Feel free to laugh, guffaw or chortle, but is there any way i can split the file up and take it in chunks on numerous CD-Rs?

By all means point, laugh, and mock..............as long as you help afterwards. :D

If I need to send off big files at work I use WinRAR. That lets you shrink the files down and break them up into smaller chunks if they're still too big.

Option 1 - Using something like Winrar can save the file in an archive, but you can split the file up into small chunks, even tiny ones.

Option 2 - Buy a USB flash memory stick. I got my 8Gig one from PC world for £16, and you can find smaller ones fairly simply. Most office supplies stores and computer related places have them. Even large Tescos and Argos carry them...

Zip it up (WinRAR, etc,) and either email it in chunks or simply put the whole thing on a USB stick. As long as the file isn't something you shouldn't have (like your employers live data or customer info - think of the headlines if you lose it!) that should do it nicely.

You could always try www.yousendit.com. It lets you send and receive up to 2GB. Could always compress the file first before sending it to make it even quicker. Just means you won't have to split the file up and can save a bit of time.
