1912 and all that.....

Postby Mandrake » Dec 4th, '08, 15:41

No idea if this is of any interest but I was in a coin shop today looking for pre-1912 coins (for a Titanic routine, obviously!) and the guy told me that there's a great demand for coins in good condition dated 1912. Not because of the Centenary of the Titanic's sinking but because of the Olympics. It looks like there will be some commemorative items issued with a 1912 and a 2012 coin involved. If you need 1912 coins for anyth9ing then go and buy them now, if you have any which you don't want, make sure you don't sell 'em too cheaply :D ! I'd have thought 1948 coins (for the last UK based Olympics) wouild have been more appropriate but what do I know?

I would imagine that any events intended to mark the Titanic Centenary will be overshadowed by the Games....

I hate to break this to you old chum, but very little gets in the way of celebrating testosterone ... I mean, Sports. Not only is it the sort of thing that aids the modern "man" in expressing (and releasing) some of its more primal aspects, it's overtly commercial e.g. where the dollar is to be made it will take precedent.

I've complained countless times over the fact that I pay fair money for cable Tv only to find over two-dozen channels pandering to nothing but sports PLUS the nasty habit it has of preempting my favorite shows on standard network TV... I really think it all need neutering.

Not that I was there at the time, of course, but the 1948 Games were known as the 'Austerity' Games as the effects of WWII were still being felt, not much money around and everything had to be done as cheaply as possible. Since the credit crunch, worldwide recession etc is likely to be long term, plus the recently announced £70 Million shortage in funding, the 2012 Games could become known as 'The Return of The Austerity Games'!

Anyways, I managed to buy three old English pennies, 1911, 1910 and 1909 - all for 50p!

For starters Richard, you're new here so I'll give you one free poke... the primary rule of the land is don't poke the American Bear.

Secondly, ranting and railing is my job

 Please tell me you're not that bad taste that keeps coming back on us every time he's booted from here and thus morphs into another identity :?

There're a few good coin dealers on ebay and their prices aren't all that bad. I've emailed a few of them in the past about getting a specific set of coins and they've always been more than happy to oblige.

It might be worth giving those people a try.

Dearest Craig.

I am who I say I am, Mandrake will hopefully confirm that, having watch my episode of Magic Party.
To you I will humbley apologise for saying what I said on this friendly forum, I wont however stop thinking it. You are, clearly very knowledgable in the art of guerilla mentalism and for that i applaud you sir. The rants I will take with a pinch of salt, and a splash of vinegar.

Here's to much future debate and laughter

No worries folks, Richard is kosher inasmuch as he's not who Craig and one or two others thought he might be. I know that sounds a bit cranky but at least I know what I mean - I think :? !

Anywho, back to the plot - threepence in old English pennies was the price of half a pint of strong lager beer on Titanic and that would have been the main 'treat' for the third class steerage passengers.

Anyone who has 'White Star' will probably see where all this fits in........8)

Clearly Richard is who he says he is, otherwise why would he plug "Urban" so much?

I agree with Craig on this particular issue... sports on TV... if you want to watch sports, go to a game or subscribe to a sports channel, don't impinge on everyone elses preferred programming.

But then, I'm a curmudgeon.

I can only apologise for plugging Urban so. It's not for financial gain (as i get nowt) but for sheer pride. I would say that everytime i did was justified. Damn I'm over defending myself ha ha. I'll plug in the plugging.
