Magnetize a 5 Cent coin??? (euro)

Postby Johnny-M » Dec 8th, '08, 13:28

Hi

I was wearing my PK ring at a club, doing Prohibition on a couple of girls, anyway! I notived that 1,2 and 5 Cent coins have a Steel core when I reached into my pocket (still got away with prohibition although had 2 coins stuck in my hand).

What would be the best way to permanently magnetize a coin?? There are some sweet tricks that can be pulled of with a magnetic coin, I hadn´t done any because I couldn´t find any magnetic Euro coins anywhere.

any suggestions before I start experimenting?
Thanx

you cant do it yourself. if you need a magnetic coin, best buy a shimmed one from a dealer.

It should be possible by creating an electromagnetic field using electricity and then taking the coin and placing it in that field, the coin would pick up some of the magnetism. Plus, if the coin is heated really hot (above its Curie point) and then put in the field and then allowed to cool while in the field, it should really pick up the magnetism! This is how commercial permanent magnets are usually made..

So!
Problem 1.- The Curie Point of Steel is about ~1500F or ~800°C
Problem 2.- I don´t know how strong the field has to be, well I´m a Material Science mayor so I could calculate it, but i´m way to lazy to learn magnetic field theory again.

I think I should have asked if someone know where to buy Magnetic Euro coins instead ;)

You can get this stuff called PK putty it makes stuff temporarily magnetized. You can get it at Dudethatscoolmagic

thanx! I think i´ll give the PK putty a try, I have a fairly strong PK ring I bought from a neodym manufacture instead of a magic shop (much cheaper also) so I can get also a normal 2 euro coin to stick pretty firm to the ring.

Now, there is this trick I want to do, without revealing too much; its about getting a 2 euro coin though a coaster thats resting on a empty glass just by smaking your hand on the coaster and it apears to fall through the coaster into the glass. would this work with the putty??

greetz!

There are many reasons to either begin collection of Euro coins or add these coins to an lready growing collection. The first Euro design has already been changed, making them still able to be used as currency but with time they'll become harder to find increasing their rarity. There were commemorative Euro versions that were minted that collectors might want to have simply to say they have set of these special coins.

You can magnatize the coin by running it across a magnet once, however it is not permanent.

If you wanna DIY, get some epoxy. Take apart a euro coin from its ring. I hammer my ring bounded coins. the inner silver part is now apart. File one side of it, and get another euro coin and do the same procedure but file the other side now. Get those thin steel rulers and cut a size that would fit the euro.

Now you have to stick it onto one part of the filed halves, with epoxy, and stick it back. Now you are going to have to keep testing and filing the other half until they both are aligned with the bronze ring piece. Now take both of these parts out of the ring after you have found that they align perfectly. Glue them with some epoxy. Now apply epoxy to the inner circumference of the bronze ring. Also apply epoxy to the ring again. I dunno about euro's but if the euro also has a tiny projection , you will have to press hard to let it go inside of the ring. Now just wait for it to dry.

......... Or buy a shimmed euro :) lol

Edit: Just realized that you need a 5 cent euro, which does not have a ring along its edges. Just buy one :)

In theory, a blow torch could get you to the Curie point and an serious electromagnet could generate the field, but it doesn't seem worth it, somehow, for one coin!
