Floating something under a cloth or handkerchief

Postby Illusionart » Dec 12th, '08, 15:12

Hello all,

I am thinking of way's to levitate something, say a small ball, under a cloth.

There are a few ways of doing this, I do not mean the Zombie ball,
I want to float the ball(or other object) around and through my hands or hoop, then place a cloth over the ball and continue to float it.

Any ideas?

I know I will come up with something in time,
it is always good and useful to talk with others.

Thank you all

Are you going to be up on stage or close up. There are quite a few wayus if you're on stage, something along the lines of the floating rose perhaps. If you're up close then it's probabaly more tricky

your talking about teh method used in the silver moon floating ball.
adapted, you could float under a cloth first, then freefloat. or vise versa.
Im in two minds as to which is the best order of floatation though.

Also, you could have the zombie stitched into the cloth. that way, you get the best of both worlds

thank you very much for the information so far.

I am wondering about all ways, close up, on stage, everything and anything.

Its all got to be considered, i really am wanting to create something, so I will consider all methods and all environments.

Not familiar with the Silver Moon bit Dale mentioned but I do know that similar effects were possible with the old Astrosphere from days long gone by.

There is a myriad of material out there on floating balls and aside from the NEJM I'd suggest that you simply start collecting everything you can on the topic and work with each method until you find the combination that works best for you.

Combination?

Yes... the best floating ball/light bulb acts ALWAYS used more than a single hook-up or method. The famed Floating Light Bulb used a minimum of 3 hook-ups for an example. My old floating ball routine four gimmicks (an Abbott's "Floating Ball" (which I'm certain Dale and Allen are chuckling over just in my mentioning it), a standard Zombie gimmick, a variation to the Don Wayne rigging and a little extra something of my own.)

I will recommend strongly that you look up Finn Jon's floating ball & cane routine in that it is one of the most beautiful acts in all of magic, when it comes to this sort of effect.

look up astrosphere. Its the same as the zombie but it can be done without a cloth or with a transparent one.

Thank you all,

I did mention that I do want to try all the methods, but I will not be using zombie balls, perhaps for some of the performance yes, but not most or all.

I will look up what you have all given me so far.

Thank you for the enthusiasm and great information.

I LOVE magic.

When I find what I am looking for or invent something, I will report back to you all.

I searched for Finn Jon, I found this video of him, after the nice silk trick he performs his ball and cane routine.

It is wisest to not comment when you don't know what you are talking about; the Astrophere is nothing like a Zombie on any level.

Yes Craig, you are right, but they have a connection, they both use balls and cloths, so this is the connection they where making.

I have had a look at the Astrosphere, its not what I am thinking of, I will try some ideas out.

I am getting a Braco's floating glass sphere, that will be nice, but I do need something to practice with, I don't want to break it while practicing.

I am so tired, but magic is rushing in my veins and I must just stay up a little longer, i have just come up with some ideas for close up, i need to write them down.

thanks everyone

Craig's right! The Atrosphere is a very pretty effect. I believe that ball can even float in front of the cloth, in a very visual manner. One of my favorites!!

I think Tannen's seill sells this. It truly is a classic.

Thank you very much Mark, but I have just posted that I am not interested in the Astrosphere, I suppose that it is good to put that information anyway, as other people may be interested.

However, the Astrosphere has nothing to do with what I am asking, I want to know about floating something freely and then covering it and it still floats, I also mentioned that it does not have to be a ball.

Thank you

My bad. Have you considered Loops, IT or an ITR ?

Hello Mark, well, I am thinking more along the lines of a classic floating ball,
The difference being the way I perform it, I different setup, I also want to cover the floating ball with a cloth.

Thank you for your advice though.

I think that ITRs and Loops suite much smaller less maneuverable illusions.
