The long and short (and wide) of it

Postby Ted » Jan 12th, '09, 11:43

Hi all,

I am having a devil of a job finding somewhere that sells wide cards and long cards. Short are obviously less of a problem...

Does anyone know of a place that sells these things?

(Cards4Magic only sells long Jokers. I'm after regular pip/face cards.)
Cheers.

Wide cards are almost impossible to find. I know, because after 2 years of looking fo them for someone else. ive drawn a blank.
Your best bet is to either use a poker card in a bridge deck. Better yet, trim the edge of a whole deck, then use cards from a second, as your wide card.
I would imagine that you need to obtain a full un cut sheet of cards, and custom cut them, in order to make a long and wide cards, which isnt impossible..( I think upc sell them as decorative works of art) Just rather expensive

How about going about it in reverse? Get a short deck, and swap a normal card in as a long one.

That could work. Essentially I am after multiple locators, so I'd have to come up with two more aditional options.

There was a post ages ago on another forum whereby it was suggested that putting the required long card through a roller press might expand it enough to be detected by the fingers. If I remember right the big problem (apart from obtaining a roller press!) was that the card became curved. Further thoughts were to use a simple dried flower press which could be made from two rectangles of plywood and four bolts and wing nuts to apply the pressure - much like the sort of thing used to flatten bent decks. I don't think any results were published but, assuming it doesn't ruin the card itself, perhaps warming the card at a very low heat in an oven and then locking it it in such a press while it cooled might manage to expand the card enough to be detectable. Might be worth trying if anyone has a few hours to spare and the necessary bits and prices to make a press.

This thread seems to have provided the answer. Narrow and long decks available making an ordinary card a long or wide card.
