Why are you so bent on using a gimmick? The joy of magic is using your hands and learning the skills needed to do what you want. I would train your hands to do the magic first because there is great pleasure in doing so.

But if a gimmick you want, then try the Jack Miller Holdout.

Hi there,

I have to agree with Ray - why use a gimmick when a sleight can produce, in my opinion, a much cleaner vanish.

The problem with such gimmicks you wish for advice choosing between, is that none of them are practical to use - speaking from a workers point of view. If I was a "youtube" magician, then I would reccommend them fully.

You need to decide which category you wish to fall in. If you want to be a worker, work on the sleights. If you want to be a "youtube-ician", then buy all 4 gimmicks.

I totally have to agree with the guys, I'd forget about the gimmicks and stick to using sleights. The Raven is one of those things that many of us have bought because we thought it looked good, only to find that it's totally impractical. None of the gimmicks will give you anything that can't be do with sleights.

I'm with the chaps and chapesses on this one. The Raven? It's like half a trick isnt it? What's the point of disappearing something you can't bring back? You might as well throw the coin in a river and say Hey Presto! Gone!

It might seem the easier way of doing things, but the easier way isnt always the best.

It depends on what you want to use the raven for.

I use a Wacom tablet instead of a mouse with my computer. The pen of the tablet is a bit old and I can't draw straight lines anymore with it. The lines just wobble up and down.

I discovered that if I rub the pen along the raven, I can draw straight lines again for some time, so now I’m using the raven as a 'magic pen rubber'.

But for vanishing a coin, I would not recommend it ...

That is, hands down, the best use I have ever heard for The Raven.

Bravo sir, and may a thousand virgins do the naughty thing of your choosing. Or something.

Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash, and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.

If you're into coin work, there's a really cheap and incredibly useful gimmick you can get from most clothing stores. I can't remember what it's called at the minute...

...Oh that's it. Sleeves.

I had a good laugh over that one. I was wondering where the post was leading, but it came out very well :-) I'll have to keep that tidbit in mind. My wife's Wacom tablet is getting old, and I don't have the money right now, but I do have a Raven I don't use! :o

Just as an idle question, who does use a Raven? Back in the days when I thought that there were things out there that would make you do magic without any difficult stuff I bought one. I still have it in mint condition in its box at the back of my CUPS drawer.

Yeah, We're clearly missing whatever kind of net joke he's trying to make with all this.

I got a Raven when I first started out, wrongly thinking that simmicks like that were the way to go. I practised with it for about 20 minutes, decided that it was a load of old men's pants and promptly put it on ebay. Incidently it ended up selling for more than I'd paid for it. :)
