Robbie wrote:(It had some pretty decent music, though, by the Eurythmics. I still have the album.)

I seem to remember the director disowning the film at an awards ceremony because someone had swapped out the original orchestral score for the Eurythmics one against his wishes.

EDIT: Here's the story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nineteen_E ... ical_score

Most of the dvd versions scrap the Eurythmics music and use the original film score. It works a lot better with the atmosphere. Certainly a lot better than sex crime breaking into serious scenes. I do like the film, but I have wondered whether it would make any sense to people who haven't read the book.

I saw someone else has brought up brave new world. Another excellent book. Huxley's the island is well worth a read. It's become more and more relevant as time goes on.

Yes, if you like 1984 you should also read Brave New World. I always include Lord of the Flies in the same group, too.

I recently re-read Brave New World, and thought it's showing its age because of the technology involved, it's still increasingly prophetic in its ideas. For instance, we're at a point where capitalist society requires the sort of people who buy consumer durables (cars, etc.) as if they were disposable items to help keep going. When they fail to buy, thousands suffer job losses and recessions deepen.

Time for some more soma and promiscuity I think...
