Couple who are into magic together, what do you think?

Postby DonkeySkin » Feb 1st, '09, 00:36

Just wondered if people on here like it if their girlfriend / boyfriend or indeed spouse is also into magic? Is that something that would peak your interest or would it feel a bit intense?

My boy is tolerant enough of my hobby and even impressed the odd time he actually gets to see me do a trick but he's not really interested. I don't mind and wonder if it would be a little weird and intense to both be into it as magic it's self just for one person can be a little weird and intense!

Still it might also be nice, what do you think?

it may be too much of a nerd off in some respects...

but at the same time, it would also save a bit of money if you were both into the same thing...

i think i'd prefer to not be going out with someone who was also into magic, as, purely for selfish reasons - i'd like them to be my test subject and pull me up on things that normal spectators would think/see....rather than say "hoy, i saw you swami there..."

but ultimately - it depends on how fit they are! :P :D

My missus keeps threatening to learn some card magic.
But then she threatens a lot of things...

Copy-editing my work-in-progress...
Writing a bit for my upcoming website...
Moving in...

In short, I doubt she will ever learn card magic ;)

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

My girlfriend doesn't really know much magic as such but we are working together on some two person mental effects with her acting as a kind of medium.

My last long term partner did threaten to get in to magic and even went as far as having me order her the chinese linking rings but they have remained in the box unused for about 6 years now!! 2 years while I was with her from the purchase to the 4 years now passed since our split!!

If you're into stage magic and illusions then having a partner who is really into the magic and being part of the act can be hugely beneficial as you will both share the exact same sense of direction and perfection and you get to talk, discuss changes, bounce ideas around etc more easily and readily than if you had a simple paid assistant.

When someone does finally find me attractive again it would be nice if she was in to magic though I'm undecided as to what depth of interest!

Hey it's worked for some of the big names. My ex used to do 1 trick and she did it really well, she came up with the patter herself.

When I was 20 I went out with a 27 yr old professional Clown, only I didn't know at the time...that was weird. Nothing against clowns of course, but when one morning you wake up and theres a she-clown moving around in your room...

And this girl I'm seeing now I met through performing a trick last week at a bar, course she ended up outperforming me (?). That was also weird...

girlfriend's

Postby abecedarianmind » Feb 1st, '09, 16:45

i taught a mate some basic tricks when i worked part-time in a magic shop

he took them on holiday, and his girlfriend saw him doing them so often she basically learnt the routines, and she started doing them herself

last time i saw them, they were in the shop arguing over who was the best at the tricks

i think magic is best left to social inadequates who can't form relationships

My gf likes to watch Derren Brown on TV and has seen his and Pete Firmans shows with me. However, she has no interest in learning magic which is kind of a shame as I'd love to be able to do a double act that involved some code work. Plus her cleavage would be perfect for misdirection! (She was voted best breasts by all the guys on her course)

I think it's nice, as long as rivallry or resentment about one being "the assistant" doesn't break out! Also means that partners are going to feel less like magic widows!

And yes, we're all nerds.
