You have hit the nail on the head. Anyone can download the 1,000 books on magic and mentalism from BitTorrent, or what have you, but how long is that going to take to digest? I'm not sure I'd be able to suck every ounce of useful information from Corinda's 13 Steps and Annemann's PMM (to mention two classics) before 2020, let alone burn through 10 or more other books in any meaningful way.
There is, of course, the legal side to this. Copying copyright-protected content is illegal, be it music saved to MP3 format or Derren's old out-of-print books. Making an unathorised copy of these is against the law. Assuming we all believe that we live in a lawful society, this means that it is wrong.
So, to summarise my late-evening post, fuelled by a rather acceptable Merlot: Anyone who downloads this stuff without buying it is naughty. And I'd predict that most of these thieves will never read it properly and are simply collecting. This scenario does not make them any less wrong, though. If someone wants to collect then they should pay.
I now declare an amnesty on pirated magic texts. Hand them in, ladies and gentlemen, and we'll say no more.
