I don't remember Jay Scott Berrys Dematerialization? I don't mean to date you but what year about was it released? Sounds interesting!

Let's see... 1983-84 perhaps?
In Jay's vanish you would see him cup the item into his hands and suddenly smoke would come rolling out between his fingers and as he slowly opened his hands the item was gone as this amazing smoke emerged... it was quite enchanting! He had them on the market for some time but I'm unsure if he's still selling.
My biggest problem (and it seems to be the one draw back most of us are seeing) is the cap gun thing... if he used the cap to trigger some smoke powder or a bit of flash paper with smoke & sparkles in it, that would be very cool but just the little snap and no smoke.... it's going to hurt sales.
You mention a "loop" that permits instant reset... The Raven had such a thing ages ago. It was one of the reasons I still love the Raven.
The video needs to be shot from two perspectives however; one or two shots from over the shoulder, as it is present shown but at least three to five shots from the audience perspective so people can see what the public would see vs. what the magician sees.
If your friend corrects the smoke element and shoots some footage as suggested, editing it in to what he has now, I think you could expect strong sales. As it stands, and I honestly mean it, the snap ruins the thing and deters reason for interest given the myriad of similar pulls already on the market e.g. it's not different
enough
It's hard to create "New" Magic, especially when you don't have the resources for doing proper research. I see so many situations in which someone is reinventing the same wheel, believing that a simple change in color (for example) means it's "different" and thus, better. It is not however "new"... a Red Origami cabinet is the same illusion as the Blue one made by an unauthorized builder (long, very old story). This perspective however, applies to all levels of magic, this particular device being proof of it; the creator being far better off if he'd simply include, within a book or article, his spin on using (insert your favorite contemporary pull here) and how to add the flash/smoke rather than chasing the dollar and idea of being an inventor.
I can't stress enough how difficult is really is, to create "original" magic. I can assure you that 95% of what most of us come up with and believe to be "New" and "Novel" AIN'T! It's just an independent discovery of things already done. This is particularly true to those that have only been around magic a very short time and who have had little to no exposure to the pro world and how it really works... but I'm rambling at this point, so few willing to actually HEAR what I'm saying and why.
