Postby FairieSnuff » Feb 25th, '09, 21:18

What stuff have you brought that is nostalgic in some way, for example with money from a comp or first paying gig that you stiill have to remind you of that event??..

No reason, just curious ...

I don't buy much, but I always learn new sleights whilst watching films. Whenever I do a sidesteal I just get "The Transporter" flashbacks and the strike second deal I get "Spirited Away."

What about you Fairie?

My first ever magic purchase was a Svengali deck from Hamleys. It was a Waddingtons deck and I still have it somewhere. Bit bruised and battered, but still complete. And it came with a signed pic of some fella called Berglas.

I have a lot of the Paul Daniels TV Magic Tricks from the 1980s and a signed deck of Wayne Dobson playing cards from when he toured with his Illusion Show late 80s/early 90s.

I have a signed copy of George Kovari's magic book, and an assistants certificate, which bring back fond memorys.
It was at the hexagon in reading, and George had me up to shoot a ribon through his assistant.

I strapped George Junior into a straight jacket too.
He was ever so young then....

but then wernt we all. :)

Ive just realised that many reading this, wouldnt even of been born then.

I've got a signed copy of Derren Brown's book "Absolute Magic".

I stood at the stage doors for about an hour, in the cold, waiting to get it signed. :)

(Most of my Derren Brown dvds are signed (by DB  ) as well.)

Also any effect I've purchased face to face from it's creator holds some kind of nostalgic value.

I have an Okito glass and a Blendo Silk which were bought from Supreme many moons ago.

The reason there is some nostalgia attached (more than all my other old Supreme stuff) is that we visited in person. My kind parents (I was only little) drove all the way to Bideford, and then we knocked on the door, only to be told it was 'mail order only'. But Ian Adair (I think) kindly showed me around anyway, and then gave some advice on what I should get. Very kind of him and much appreciated.

And I opened a stage-act last year with the same Blendo routine. (alas the Okito glass has never been used in public!)

I don't recall the name, but I bought a trick 40 years ago when I was in college. The blurb claimed it was first introduced in the Magic Castle and fooled all the magicians. It was beautifully crafted--but of course I lost it.

Some years ago I purchased it again. It is now a cheap Chinese made trick sold in Joke shops etc. It's a cube with six different coloured sides. Spectator puts the cube in a box, the mage shakes the box and discerns the upmost colour.

I still use my rubbishy-made trick, but I wish I had the original.

Anyone know what it was called?

it was called " colour vision".

indeed Mikame still list a lovely wooden one on their site.

I had a lovely one years ago. it was a super wooden box, and inside were 6 different colured squares of foam. you could then tell them the order of the colours.. It worked in exactly the same way as colour vision.

I lost it. Its actually a collectors item now.It was made by the company " chus magic", who are still around, but only make plastic junk today

My most nostalgic item is my first Bicycle deck - the one with which I practised my very first sleights, the one that made me a cardie. It's still complete, but the cards are heavily worn and feel more like felt rather than cardboard. I rarely ever use it anymore - only for feats that require some old, mystic setup (e.g. Aunt Mary's Terrible Secret).
