Dear all,

Are there any T.V Magic Shows (i., Paul Daniels, Stuff White Rabbit, Stars of Magic etc) featuring close-up and/or card magic on official DVDs? If so, where can I buy them? Can you help??

Yours, Paul Gordon

sometime ago i managed to buy a dvd with one episode of a fred Kaps magic show on it. It was an early John Fisher production, that set the mould for Paul Daniels.
What made it special, was apart from Kaps, his close up guest was Slydini, who used a very young Martin Breese as his helper from the audience.
the willards did their xray site act, ( again with martin) and Shimada did his parasol/ dragon act.
most of Kaps signature effects were there. The homing card, ring on glass, and the salt pour.

now, wether it was a kosher dvd, or something cobbled together.. i dont know.

also, the kreskin dvd set that you can buy from amazon, contains loads of card stuff. some of it is a bit naff, but some of it is ok.

I think the bbc hold all the rights to Paul Daniel's stuff and have so far refused to release any of his stuff on dvd, I just remember hearing this somewhere so I can't confirm it 100%.

les might be able to shed some light on the situation as it stands. I know Pauls got most of the stuff on disk now, and recently sold on his original tapes via ebay.

I am a big fan of Paul Daniels (partly because of his magic, but mainly because of Debbie McGee!) So, when in the UK several years ago I picked up a few of his packet tricks. They were very disappointing. The quality of the gaffs were second rate, the instructions were clear, but consisted of little more than "How to do it" -- i.e. no presentation hints, etc--and Paul is super with his presentations.

I know that this isn't what you are looking for--but if a Paul Daniels DVD were to be released, I would be slow to purchase until I had seen a few good, solid reviews.

Paul has mentioned before that he's asked the BBC about buying the tapes of the TV shows with a view to DVD releases but was quoted over £10,000 per show to release the tapes. If the Beeb aren't going to turn them into DVDs then I wonder why they are preventing Paul from doing it? It's been said that he overstayed his welcome at the BBC and thus set their minds against any future straight forward magic shows but after all this time there's no longer any need to hold the tapes back - is there? We asked the BBC about the possibility of showing one or two of Paul's Shows as part of the celebration of the Magic Circle Centenary and they said they'd consider it and get back to us. We're still waiting.... :?
