Advice from those in the know please

I have been thinking a lot over the last couple of years about setting up an event coordination company. My background lies in gig promotion and club event organising. I'm also experienced in lighting rigs and some stage pyros etc. I also have a sharp sales mind.

Thing is though is it worth setting up such a company?
What would you focus on? A specific sector or a general service?
How can you best start with a zero budget lol? (Phased payments from clients I figure works well in my landscaping but will it in this environment?)
Any of you want to be on the books if I do set it up?
And any other points you feel are worthy of considering...

I think you're right to consider a certain angle first. Going for everything to start with would be a bit of a major task I reckon.

Possibly contacting hotels to see what sort of events they hold, who currently organises them & how things could be improved. You could gather all your contacts together, dj's, entertainers, equipment suppliers etc & get some on board.

It might be an idea to think of a brand image & web presence, definately before you go into any meetings with potential clients. They'll want some proof that you'll deliver so a zero budget might not be great. Perhaps looking at how people start performing in magic (for favours or on the cheap) just to get a couple of bookings behind you.

Someone I know recently sold herself to a hotel who have never had wedding fayres before & now she organises all the weddings & had a very succesful fayre there a few weeks ago.

ps i'd be on your books.

I'd be more than happy to go on your books if you wanted me :d

I think that having some sort of angle is a good idea, variety shows, music gigs, whatever it is I think that you need an area that you can push yourself forward in.

Good luck with it, it sounds like a great idea to me.

Events and Ents are in my blood as I have been on stage since I was 8 in one way or another never mind behind the scenes stuff!!

Maybe I should seek a silent partner... someone who will stump up cash to a well reasoned argument for it when required (as well as refuse it when it is folly) but will allow me to drive the company forwards!
