ROPE THROUGH OPINIONS

Postby dat8962 » Mar 20th, '09, 19:07

I need some views on what you think is the more impressive and hopefully you can provide the answer

Please consider this from a lay persons perspective.

This is for a performance with a Victorian block and rope.

1) The rope is threaded through the block and around the body. It is seen to then penetrate the block.

2) The rope is thrieded through the block and around the hands which hold the block. The rope then comes free from both.

The hands method means that all of the rope is in view throughout whereas the rope but becuase it is comact it is difficult to see whereas the rope through body looks cleaner but may look suspicious because of it being wrapped around the body and is partially out of view.

I can't make my mind up :? - please help

Excellent, a request for my level of ability!

I'm going to ask you 2 stupid questions (I don't know this effect):

- the rope is going through the magician's hand/body or the spectators'?
- how far would you be from your spectator?

If I was the spectator, and it was performed on me, I would prefer to see the rope go through my hands. Obvisouly it's closer to my eyes and to me it's more visual. If you were to tie the rope behind my back I wouldn't know what you'd done and the release would be less visual.

If it was you being tie up by someone else / with someone's assistance, on stage, then the "whole body option" would be more visual I think, so I would prefer that one.

I've also seen a version with a knot in a scarf tied around the magician's neck, which is nice to see as it pops through :) I think there is a chain version as well somewhere?

I vote hands, purely on the fact that the level of impossibility is hiked up a notch with the rope being completely visible.

Also, it just seems, well, cleaner.

For the block I'd say hands. It's usually easier to keep track of both the rope and the block when its concentrated on an area like the hands. Better for the spectators. Also there are better routines with ropes for body penetrations without using the block.

good questions

the rope is going through the magician's hand/body or the spectators'?

The rope will pass through the core of the wooden block and then wraps around the spectators body as opposed to his or her hands. The spectator is stood in front of the audience who will be in a parlour setting. The rope penetrates the solid block.

how far would you be from your spectator?

could be up to 20 to 25 feet.

I'm leaning towards the hands more so now with the current replies. Thanks :P

Just to be different I'm going to say the body. I think if you were doing this close up then hands might be better but as you're up in front of an audience I think that the body might work better because it'd be easier for people to see.
