Is anyone involved with them here?

I'm not involved with them, but I do think Scientologists are scum.

I think Scientologists are mainly decent folk who have become grossly mistaken, and have been taken to a bad place where they end up at ethical odds with the rest of mankind. Only a few are aware that it's a scam; they either rise to the top or leave the church to work out their own scams - ponzi schemes, bioresonance therapy, whatever...

Now, about spiritualism...

Here's the sinister thing. They use a process called "auditing". Basically, it's a therapy/confessional process. however, whereas Catholic priests simply absolve and forget, this lot record it all. There are a large number of cases where those confessions are made public to discredit those who subsequently speak out. What kind of 'church' does that?

i kinda agree with the Gruester too...

often, when people go through something terrible and life changingly bad and suffer...they often grasp onto something...

sometimes its for the good...and sometimes for the bad...

i know someone in holland who went through a very terrible and prolonged "thing", and ended up getting into religion and talking in tongues and all that stuff...

we, as humans...and even wee as humans - pretty much all have a "something" to help us get through in life...its just unfortunate when we latch onto an unhealthy ideal that we can create more problems for ourselves...

Tomo - auditing is worse than that. Have you read anything of Elizabeth Loftus, reconsolidation theory and false memory syndrome? Auditing seems geared towards creating false memories, as it deals with stuff we're not supposed to have a conscious memory of in the first place. And Hubbard takes time out to explain just the sort of nasty an auditor is supposed to uncover. How's that for priming!

A friend of mine once read out a long list of the ridiculous questions they ask during auditing in the pub. It was hilarious!
