ok this is not exactly a magic question and i apologise in advance, but you are all knowledgeable in different fields so i'll ask anyway.

when doing a disco what music is allowed to be played and who needs to be paid royalties if any, i ask because there appears to be a grey area here and i dont want to fall foul of the law or worse the raa.

i know my kids music is ok but what if i buy a now cd can i play this to a paying audience or at a function were i am paid by the owner, any legal advice would be greatfully recieved as nobody i know seems to have all the facts many thanks jason.

Nope you can't even play it to a non paying audience. But I can't really help you with what you need to do.

A lot of venues like pubs and clubs which have performance licenses are allowed music played anyway, I think (they have to note down the songs or something like that, and report to PRS?!?!? or somesuch company)

The easiest way to find out, I think, would be to contact your local sheet-music shop or even try here http://www.prs.co.uk/Home

This should explain further what you are needing to know.
