Well..

just to update you all on my progress..

I bought some velvet and some small sheets of some thin foam and then spent a while cutting and glueing.. the end result is a fairly decent closeup mat that does work with blackart (obviously with the right lighting)

Anyway.. I must say that it doesn't really roll or pack away small (I don't want to damage it) but it does work and is ideal for my needs.

I would like to actually buy one to carry round with me etc.. but I'm not sure how the blackart stuff would work on them.

Pcwizme, could you use velvet with yours to do black art stuff or would I need to try and get matching material (which would be a real problem)

I'm still open for advice on this one.. I have something that works and looks good.. but it's not all that practical for taking from place to placve really.

I will check for you when i get back from my cousins wedding this weekend (told to go light so just 1 box of cards and thats it) but i have a feeling it wont however it could easly be recovered i spose

1 question is it velvet or velvetine (there is a slight diffrence)(my mum makes dresses and stuff for people so i have bundles laying around of all materials so i will find out and let you know all the details)

I have read through but i just cant make up my mind what to do.
Does anybody have any reccomendations over a specific mat. I need one that is about 12" x 14" or near (it doesnt need to fold up into something the size of a pea or anything like that!). Should i make my own or buy one?

I have made some custom pad/boards in the past.

I take a nice size piece of plywood, put a layer of automobile headliner on the top. Use a spray adhesive (3M) to attach it to the board, then cover it with the fabric of your choice. Mine are covered with kind of a velvet/felt fabric. Not sure what it's called. You have to stretch this fabric tight and tack it to the under side with upholstery tacks.

I also added padded feet to the under side, a folding luggage handle that folds under and brass corners.

It makes a really nice board that is easily transported because of the handle and safe to place on any surface because of the padded feet.

Take your time and make a good one. I have sold a few of the ones that I made for $100. It takes time, but will only cost you about $30 to make and will last 1000 times longer than any pad you buy.

BTW- I have a really big board that I made with just the Automotive headliner for practice and not for my shows.

And oh, the headliner you should be able to get at any fabric store and it comes in a variety of colors.

I just bought a purple 16" x 13" mat from www.cards4magic.co.uk for £10. Its exactly what i would want from a mat and i highly reccomend it. Especially the colour!

Does anyone know if you buy a magic mat how do you know if you are getting the apollo mat? does it have the name on it or is it plane? also are there differences in quality?
