'zibit' cases??

Postby lozey » May 6th, '09, 15:12

Im in the process of putting together a zibit collection and am looking for some cases to house my collection. Doug H suggests cheap acrylic fishtanks, but I dont seem to be able to find anything suitable over here (He lives in the US). Iv looked at acrylic display cases/cubes, but the largest they seem to do is for footballs and I need something at least 20" in length for my largest specimen (ooh inuendo bingo alert ;) ). Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm guessing freak show type exhibits. Feejee mermaids, jackalopes, big foot feet etc. I got a bell jar from a car boot sale for displaying something I made a while back. Doing the rounds of car boots sales and flea markets can find suitable display solutions. Antique and historical artefact shops may have something suitable, but then your getting pricey. Otherwise fish tanks would seem the cheapest option.

edit: or maybe ask Dan at Lebanon magic circle what he uses for the faeries.

Yep, I believe 'zibit' comes from the word 'exhibit'. Its basically a wierd curiosity type item like a mermaid, monkeys paw, mummified head ect

I used to make my own display cases out of acrylic glued together with Tensol or glass ones using clear silicone... I realise most folks can't be bothered with all that malarky, so a much cheaper and easier way is to buy a plastic aquarium (available in loads of sizes from companies such as 'aquatics-online.co.uk'). All you'd have to do is get a suitable base - bit of chunky mdf or similar with some picture frame moulding around the outside. B&Q will even cut your mdf or veneered board or whatever to your desired size whilst you wait. Hope this helps.

Ferrero Rocher are usually sold in various sizes of clear acrylic boxes - might be OK for the smaller display and you get to chomp on choccy as well...

I would have been quite happy to make my own, but the only place I could find online to buy acrylic (my local DIY places dont stock it) wanted to charge me 8 quid for a small piece that would only have made up 1 side of the case!
