Theoretically possible by hooking into the process that has the handle to the audio drivers.

though I suspect that the reason there aren't many people doing this is that it's easier to mute your PC and listen to a CD

In most games - just set the Music to off. and then play your CD or MP3.
I do it all the time.

Don't be so cheap and buy the songs. C'mon, they're 80p off iTunes!

I spend so much on magic that I have not got enough, if I am feeling REALLy REALYL CHEAP I will put my phone on record next to my laptop :-)

Plus Living with my Nan leaves me one option if I put music on my stereo....boy zone or something in maltese.

Famuus....it is not a CD Rom it is an interent based game....following advice in above post it is sorted now thanks.

I know it's a little impolitic of me, but surely if you like the music then the honourable thing is to purchase it legally, rather than try to live through a Youtube filter? You will then get nice warm aurals and a nice warm aura as you have supported an artist.

Yes but if they have an album say huns nd roses, metalica or even Garjules of whom I enjoy listening to they are already rich and do not need money out of my pocket.

How do you think they get this money? Making music is their day job, they get paid doing this by people buying their music. They don't have any kind of "making music" grant from the government

This isn't strictly true these days. The current most famous musical acts make far more money from touring their show than from sales of their records. A lot of bands now give their music away for free, anyway, because they are well aware that people are just going to download it anyway if they want it, and who can blame them?

With magic it's a very different matter, because correctly purchasing an effect is making a difference to the originator's income, but with people like Metallica, who are already insanely rich, quite frankly I don't care. I'd download their albums for free in a heartbeat if only I could stand the sound of them.

You make a good point, but I can't see MagicalSmithy paying out to see bands live either :)

Downloading the odd song from time to time is fair enough, we all do it, but to deliberately refuse to buy any music at all because it's (illegally) available on youtube in its inferior quality? That's just being a dick

Forgive my insouciance but that plain 'aint so.

At the risk of dredging up this tired old and barren debate once again, it's hard to maintain a consistent ethical framework and to apply those ethics unequivocally irrespective of temporary inconvenience.

But I think that it behoves us to try or to at least to understand why we choose to fail, the effect of our consequences and our choices.

Mind you, I'm a simple laissez-faire libertarian so I'm not the best one to lecture on ethics.

This is more and more true lately. Infact, I've noticed a huge amount of material dissapearing from YouTube over the past few months - they are really cracking down hard on copyright infringement such as promo videos. I was trying to watch some Bloodhound Gang music vids and all I could find now was live footage of them filmed on phones!
