Lee Alex gave the International Magic lecture last week. He demonstrated and explained his quick change act. Very impressive stuff, but something I think more suited to bright lights and a stage. He went over the method of lifting up the hoop thing.

He has a rather groovy quick change waistcoat
http://www.magicwaistcoat.com/
which goes from blank, to a partial cake to a full birthday cake with lights. Only £220. It's quite a bright little thing.

Go on, you know you want one.

Alex said that he would probably not be making many more so get one while you can.

they are a fantastic act. Ive seen them live about 5 times.
but there are more remarkable acts.

Anybody else remember seeing a rusian circus act on the best of magic, that had a fur coat effect in it?

It's bound to be on youtube somewhere.

a lady parades around a circus ring, wearing a full length mink coat.

theres a gun shot, and the coat turned into a couple of dozen live mink, who ran off into the wings.

an amazing thing!

This is something I would *love* to be able to do. If I did stage performances, quick change would have to somehow randomly be incorporated. Maybe not the whole show, but part of it definitely.

Fascinates me. I heart it :)

They've got quick change stuff on maxellomagic.com. I think it was a colour changing dress and David and Dania's colour chaning glaves and hat.

I wish I could remember the guys name, he worked as a feature for the Blackstone show for a short while in the late 70s and early 80s and was second generation Quick Change artist.

This guy would change his gender, body build and voice in vignettes in which he's play all of the characters to plays like Oliver or Tom Sawyer. It was a phenomenal thing to watch both, from the audience and back stage where a good 1/2 dozen assistance stood at the ready to remove and add on the various bits of costume.

From the audience point of view it seemed that he'd barely vanish from one point on the stage (like a doorway), then he'd be walking through a window or other set piece at the other end of the stage in completely different regalia. It was all one single guy, not doppelgangers or the such.

I've not seen anything like this since. Though I find the bits such as Lee and others do as being quite cool, they seem to fall short when it comes to the potential around the art form... which sadly, is a dying thing, if not dead. Only these recent applications to the concept, offering it a glimmer of hope.
