Sick Board

Postby Craig Browning » May 28th, '09, 03:34

Ok, I can't believe it's just me in that this is the ONLY board I'm having the problems with... posts taking as long as three minutes to process, not being able to get on the board during certain hours because you time out and yet, if you come back later, it shows that you just visited.

The list of issues I'm having on this end is growing. I mentioned it to a moderator or two but now I'm invoking the great Gods of Magic Forum Goodness, praying that they heal this forum so people can actually participate

PLEASE!

As per the reply on the other thread, Server Speed ( http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/sutra308652.php#308652 ), the TM severs are also used for other commercial activities so there will be times when matters slow down considerably. I agree it's frustrating especially when there's a nugget of vital information or witty riposte you just have to post  !

Really?

A dedicated server is really cheap nowadays, bandwidth is as good as free.

As this board has so many adverts on it, I would be surprised if that revenue wouldn't support an upgrade to a real box.

Shared hosting shouldn't be considered - especially for a database driven app such as this board.

I am consistantly being logged out of the site, and that is with cookies enabled. I have no idea why. happens at least 2 or 3 times a month, and "remember me" is ticked when I log in. This is the only site it happens to, apart from bebo which tells you that ticking the box only lasts for 2 weeks.

I had that problem for awhile Craig, but it stopped when I used Firefox instead of Internet explorer.

I thought it was only me! Well, to be honest it usually is. But anyways... yes, I keep getting logged out. Everytime I click away from TM, when I return I have to log back in from scratch. Hardly the end of the world, but it's still a thing and I don't understand it. It started perhaps 2 weeks ago.

I haven't had this "logging out" problem, but sometimes the board runs so damn sloooooooooow. You can submit a reply on a thread and then have to wait three or four minutes for it to complete instead of the normal few seconds. Maybe someone needs to feed the server hamster more often.

I have the same log out problem.
I switched to firefox hoping it would solve the problem but it doesn't. Now everytime I close a window and open another window and go to talkmagic, I have to log in again.

Server speed is being looked into at the moment, the logging in and out thing has never hapened to me unless it's over about half an hour when it does disconnect. However I use Crazy Browser so that might have some bearing - or not. I've never tried the 'keep me logged in' option, far too risky where I work :D !

 Well, I've been on Firefox for most of the past four years in that Microsoft keeps "reinventing the wheel" and manages to totally F-up my system in ways few could even imagine possible.

I've not had too many situations of having to log back in but the postings are simply ridiculous... even getting onto the board at times is a bloody miracle.

I do agree, there is more than sufficient monthly income flowing through this site to warrant an independent server. The small one I had made three years ago cost less than $800.00 U.S.D. and though she's about to undergo a huge up-grade, I don't foresee it outliving its use for some time... just have to avoid wonder programs like VISTA

I might suggest that "the management" get in touch with Anthony Blake or Jheff as to the new up-grades made to their private sites and related support equipment. It may surprise you just as to how inexpensive things could be.

I agree with Craig. This is the slowest site I go on regularly. Can be frustrating at times. Sometimes it is so slow I give up and take up a good book instead. But the info on the site makes it worth persisting.

I know I started a thread elsewhere pointing out the slowness of TM, but getting a dedicated server? Are you serious? My hosts charge £100/month (with VAT on top of that), are you suggesting the board owner pay that much?

Most sites on the internet are on shared hosting, if you own a website and your hosting company tells you that you're not, they're most probably lying. Unless you own Google or something. But seriously, you need to be using up quite a lot of bandwidth and space to justify a dedicated server. And trust me, TM are not using up a lot of bandwidth and space

As for the logging out issue, it happens to me from time to time too. I find it happens more often if I log in from elsewhere or visit the site in more than one browser tab/window

 Ok... who gave the board the Energy Drink?

It's actually operating like a normal board all of the sudden

Regarding the 'Remember Me' problem: I've had this a couple of times and fixed it by deleting my TalkMagic cookie and logging in again (and ticking the Remember Me option).

It's not a permanent solution, because I've had to do it more than once, but it's better than logging in manually every time.
