Card Magic/Using Cards on Stage

Postby Shakutau » Jun 14th, '09, 04:47

Hey guys, Shakutau here. I have a question which has been on my mind since 3 days ago. Now, i just want to ask, is it possible to use close up card magic for stage? I know the term "close-up" really explains itself but, I was wondering how versatile cards can be/is on stage.

What sort of stuff would be avaliable to a card magician if he was to perform on stage? Stage could vary as well, how bout for a medium sized audience? How about a large audience? Very much appreciated for your time.

On stage I do cards across, ID, tossed out deck, and six card repeat. All work well. I have seen card from mouth and card to ceiling working for guys. Avoid the tricks that need a table.
In terms of coins, the misers dream works on a big stage.

I saw Marc Oberon perform his Masters Deck and bang On on a big stage.

In terms of card magic on stages, I'm of the opinion that you want to concentrate on audience action snd reaction rather than the cards themselves.

Card calling, for example: You don't need to see the cards to understand that the one you call for is the one being handed over.

Tossed Out Deck: The spectators who peeked a card sit down when their card is named. 'Nuff said.

Al Koran's Twenty Card Memory is ideal for bigger audiences.

What they all have in common is that the spectators are the focus of the effect, and not the cards. Personally, I'd avoid colour changes or torn and restored card effects for stage work, as the size of your performance area becomes quite miniscule.

Bill Abbott's "Smart Ass". A great, great piece of magic.

I have done a 45 minute stage act consisting entirely of card tricks. Of course when one is an unqualified genius such a thing is entirely natural.

I use Trilogy on stage and have made this up using Jumbo Bikes.

It plays very well indeed.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

I saw Doc Eason's multiple selection routine. Apart from the fact that you have to go through the crowd to get the cards selected, I imagine this could knock them dead in a small to medium sized stage show.

ID always goes down a treat.

Some sort of selected card appearing under their glass even though you have been no where near them (I have my ways ;-)) always gets a godo giggle.

If you have a camera and a projection screen, you can do pretty much anything. I saw Shawn Farquhar do "Shape of My Heart" to an audience of a couple/few hundred, and it came off beautiflly. Jason Latimer did something similar using a projection screen and the cups and balls. Both videos are easy to find online. I just thought I'd offer you that suggestion as well.

I perform cards in my current stage show. I do use a screen and it helps but the majority of the effect is about me and the spectator. PLay it big and it wil come across well. I perform Mind control and smoke, wonderful routines and a pleasure to perform.
