I have no idea what additional resources are available but Penn and Teller go see a quick mask change master in china.

Have a look at Quick Change by Sven Schoppenhauer, that'll get you started out.

I think I saw Dynamo do something like what you described, it was just a performance not an explanation.

Even if its not the best method, it may give you some inspiration.
