Whats the most you have worked in a weekend??

Postby Lyndon Webb » Jul 5th, '09, 09:31

I know some of you may think i am crazy, as i have had a ridiclously busy weekend.

Gig 1: Charity gig (Strolling) at an all day event - Friday (Only did 1hr45m) but was there most the day.
Gig 2: 45m meet and greet then an hour stand up - Friday night

Gig3: Meet & Greet, then strolling at a Wedding - Sat Afternoon
Gig4: 1 hour 45 min stand up - Sat evening

I am absolutely knackered, have just got up, and promised myself i wont do that many again.

Whats the most you have done??????

The most that I've done over a weekend is five and it was knackering.

Started with an anniversary party on the Friday night, a maily re-union on the Saturday afternoon, a cocktail ball on the Saturday night and rounded off with two birthday partys on the Sunday at lunch time and tea time.

Before that the most I had done was two and it's a good weekend at the moment if I do get two bookings.

During my cross-over from "standard" magic to the bizarre/mentalist/seance thingy that I do now, it wasn't unusual for me to be working Friday and Saturday night while very late running seances, then working at a wedding Saturday day and a kid's show on a Sunday.

I remember doing four one hour kids shows on one day. That was exhausting on so many levels.

This weekend I worked Friday night at a hotel in Evesham near Stratford-upon-Avon, hosting a seance event 7pm until midnight. This was a two and a half hour journey there from my home in Sheffield, and obviously two and a half hours back.

Last night (Saturday) I worked 7pm until 1am doing a seance event at Dudley Castle, two hours to get there, two hours to get back.

With a young family who are up around 6.30am, I got 3 hours kip Friday night and 3 hours kip last night. I am, as they say, buggered.

It's all very well doing seances but the spooks keep such unsociable hours. I may invent day-time seances.

Hi Lyndon. I'm actually on holiday in August, and the only seance bookings I have are on the 21st in Worksop near Nottingham/Sheffield, and the 29th at Stratford-upon-Avon. I think a few TMers are attending the Stratford one (Mandrake has his tickets already, and I think FairieSnuff is organising a trip up for TMers in the south). Full details at www.seancenights.co.uk

August tends to be a fluffy wedding month. Not complaining though, it makes a nice change! :D

After talking to Lyndon it seems he knows where Worksop is, strange that anyone does

4-6 "standard" gigs is normal but when I worked the Carney we would do as many as 19 15-minute sets a day from open to close (12+ hour days)

I did have about a five month period long ago, where I was doing four one hour shows at different locations in a day's time. I literally had to build three different shows with the same basic props, sets, etc. so we could leap frog them; one unit being set-up as one was being broken down and the other was in the middle of performance... I don't ever want to work that hard ever again. :?

The hardest schedule aside from those had to be the Marathon fundraisers I've worked; there nothing like having to do 20 minutes every other hour so as to flesh our a 24 hour schedule... and do so with at least two different type of acts (content wise).

such days are long, long gone... thank the gods!

I did seven one hour kids shows one Saturday three years ago (communion weekend) and three on Sunday. That was perhaps my busiest weekend. Another that rivaled it was when I did a show in Mayo on Friday evening, back home to Limerick, up to Belfast Saturday afternoon, down to Killarney (300 miles drive) for Saturday at midnight, back up to Belfast for Sunday afternoon, and across to Mayo (200 miles) for Sunday evening. Never again.

To date, I have not done more than 1 gig during a weekend. Of course, that would change for me depending on the offer.

Many of the people I receive offers from aren't looking to spend a lot (if any) on entertainment lately, so I have the luxury of turning many offers down (fortunately). In my band days I used to find myself running back and forth like some of the scenarios described above. 99% of the time I didn't find it worthwhile from either a financial or performing perspective.
