Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Well, difficult to answer without knowing what is "good" for you.

First of all, it does amaze most people and, yes, it's completely ungimmicked. Howerver, most scienctists or craftpersons in your audience will quickly deduce the correct explanation for the effect when witnessing the preparations (as Barrie's routine allows them to). Maybe you would even discover the "effect" yourself if you were just playing around with the props. So, given Barrie's two presentations I would not really call it a great magical or mentalist effect but rather a demonstration of out-of-the-box thinking.

It might play well as stage version. I don't have any personal experience with it done this way.

I think as a stand-alone item it is overpriced. Buy the whole book "Act II" and you will get a lot of nice routines including this one.
