David Blaine "drowning for 10 mins"

Postby Simon Shaylor » Apr 3rd, '04, 16:14

Can anyone clarify this for me. I cannot remember where i heard this one but something along the lines of "i will hold my breath underwater for 10 minutes". Anybody else heard of this or anything similar. Surely this has been done many times before. Is it anything new ?????

Just taking a quick look at his offical website, http://www.davidblaine.com/, I see it still refers to 'Above the Below' as a future event so no chance of any details re anything new. Anyway, wasn't the world record of about that time for diving without an aqualung broken last year by a girl diver? The one that advertises shampoo on TV these days?

Yes she did Mandrake.

This 10 min thing, if true, is another step in the wrong direction in my view.
Kinda like doing some cold reading and then an AC routine, it devalues what went before, everybody knows 10 mins can't happen, unless you are a whale of course, lol.

I can see him walking us through his oxygen deprivation training now, lol.
I might pass out, my brain might die, I might drop the oxygen bottle etc :)

Good luck to the guy whatever he does, fair play and all that.
It would be nice if he did some magic but he's not here to entertain me, that's loose Karens job down the local :)

I think he should combine 2 stunts- do the drowning thing mixed with the "above the below" stunt

David Blaine drowning for 40 days and 40 nights!

Well, I really don't want to prolong yet another 'Let's bash Dave' thread so I won't say anything more except that 10 minutes underwater is OK for fishies and those who are trained and/or equipped with aqualungs etc. (Crikey, I can't even stay that long in the shower or my little rubber duck goes all crinkly!)

lets just say that hes done magic a great service by keeping the idea of magic in the forefront of our minds and the general public longer than anyone else in the past ten years.

good press or bad press we are all benifiting so lets not say any more.

lol
Let me just say I have always been firmly in the David is a star camp :)
I just don't like this idea, he has helped put magic back on the map and shown us a lesson in how to read your audience and use the media to its full.

Now, back to Mandrakes "rubber duck".....

Just the regular, shrivelled rubber type. He needs about 10 minutes in the airing cupboard then he'll be as good new.

Don't frown at Mandrake's rubber duck. He'll get an inferiority complex.

No chance of that - I know I'm inferior. I'm married - nuff sed. (Mandrake sniffs, wipes his nose on the back of his trusty aardvark and takes another swig from the bottle in the brown paper bag.)
