A Harry Potter grumble - too sparing on the zombies

Postby pcwells » Jul 20th, '09, 19:51

I went to see the new harry Potter movie today.
In all, it was a decent film - as is turning out to be the case, the weakest of the Potter books are yielding the strongest movies. By that account the final two-parter should be great fun...

I have a couple of significant grumbles with it. One is a plot point that was changed for the movie, and I won't bore you with that one.

The other one is the zombies. Okay, Rowling called them Inferi, but a zombie by any other name would still be the walking dead. They were on screen for all of a minute. come on... if you have an excuse to put zombies in a movie, PUT ZOMBIES IN THE MOVIE! Make a feature of them! I can only imagine how great Out of Africa and Gandhi would have been if they'd featured zombies.

What a waste.

Other than that, I enjoyed it.

Needs more zombies though.

Pete

If you like zombies, get Left 4 Dead on the PC. Awesome, gratuitous violence. Lots of guns to play with and zombies chasing you, just begging to be shot. Don't disturb the Witch though, she's nasty (check out the one crying at the end of the clip)

I'm still debating whether or not to buy a PS3 just to play Resident Evil 5. I did it with the Gamecube when the remade RE1 got released. Didn't regret it in the slightest, but those were younger, more reckless days...

Yes, 5 does look very good and has quite a few 100% review scores. It's a great game series.

I'm playing Resident Evil 4 on the Wii at the moment. It plays surprisingly well with the Wii controller as the gun :D

nooooooooooooooooooo! do not buy Resident Evil 5!

it stinks!

honestly...though it can be atmospheric, all i can say is, I'm glad mine was free when i upgraded my xbox360, to the elite edition....i traded it in, in 3 days...

you'll be better off getting fallout 3, plenty of zombies in that, and you can do jobs for them, and buy radiated booze from them...far superior game!

I was put off Tomb Raider for the Wii because of the pointy-controller gun thing. I even bought a gun adapter for it in the hope it would make things easier, but it doesn't.

I miss auto-aim in these kinds of games. It made them compatible with beer.

I'll have to check that one out. I'm not a gamer as such any more, but my favourite franchises catch my eye every so often and I get that hankering...

fallout 3 - imagine a mixture of mad max, 50s film noire and a massive, open ended do anything you like gameplay...and several different plot endings...all wrapped up in a save anytime 1st person type game...

immense it was, most enjoyable game since mass effect!

though, if you just want a good plot and mutating humans, try Prototype...3rd person body morphing living disease style character...

What Iain said - Fallout 3 is a great game. I got it on the PC when it came out. It's a blast to play.

I hate to break it to you PC... the new PS3 for those of us that do Mentalism don't come out until September... and yes, I do mean THAT PS3  (so much for my being subtle  )

As to Mr. Potter, I was a bit torn on this one. Though I did love the added levity that was tossed in, I felt like the thing was very incomplete... opens with moguls taking photos, seeing the death eaters flying about twisting up bridges, etc. but there is never an explanation as to how such things got taken out of the broom closet... and then there's the wonderfully obvious (or it seems) telegraphing around what's really going on with Snipe and ole Dumbledor... But the ending... I was soooo disappointed. It just didn't feel "finished" as it were... not even a real "cliff hanger" so to speak.

I really hope the next segment puts all the pieces together in a way that makes sense... and we don't have to wait to see the kids shifting to yet another age bracket

I do believe the zombies were not zombie enough and they never showed the diadem, original locket, Hepzibah Smith's cup, among other seemingly unimportant plot lines that turn out to be... important. I was disappointed at the lack of a battle between death eaters and Dumbledore's (RIP) army at the end...

Regardless, I'll be interested to see how the last two parts turn out and how they'll script it.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Yup, the telegraphing was obvious, but it was there in the book too - possibly to generate gossip in the run up to the final installment.

And I agree that the ending was a letdown.

If I remember the book correctly, there was something of a battle in Hogwarts between the students and death eaters. Am I right that some of the kids got deadded in the process?

I understand why they axed the battle scene - there's an almost identical one coming up in the final movie - but what we're left with here is a big plot to get Death eaters into Hogwarts so that they can break some windows, cackle pantomime laughter and leave. All the real damage was done by characters who were already there.

Meanwhile, the whole terror of the hunt for the horcrux was skimmed over. It could have been real edge-of-your-seat Indiana Jones stuff, but it looked like they just wanted to be done with the scene as quickly as possible. I'd have liked more of the terror lake and zombies and less of the lurve potions. But that's just me. And the final revelation of what was in the locket was tossed away like an afterthought.

My goodness I'm a geek.

Looking forward to PS3 though, Craig! :)

If you're gonna do that, get Oblivion. Different style but the same engine (by the same peeps) and much more immersive. Of course, if you're gonna play Oblivion you may as well ditch that and play Morrowind. It's a far better game, less arcadey. Don't expect to be seen for a couple of years though.

Bethesda certainly know how to make good games. I spent several months of my life on Oblivion and never got tired of it. Morrowind was better in many ways, apart from the awful combat mechanics.
