I have no problems with the new movie, so long as it doesn't end up being as bad as the Hugh jackman Van Helsing farce (which it resembles all too closely in some parts of the trailer).

The serious adaptations and the original stories are still there. Holmes has long been a subject of parody, so no holy cows are being slaughtered here.

Incidentally, YouTube also pointed me towards this, which I think is a work of pure genius.

I think the biggest concern is that its being done by Guy Ritchie...

Not the first name you'd think of to direct an Holmes movie.

I had had high hopes for this when first announced but the trailer has put me off a bit. There's no reason why they can't bend the rules a bit, but im imagining a pure Hollywood sell-out.

Hmm. An American playing James Bond, playing Sherlock Holmes?! I don't think so. I'll pass.

Any fans out there should also check out "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" with the great Robert Stephens as Holmes. It was director Billy Wilder's pet project and his love and enthusiasm for it shines through every frame. Unfortunately it was chopped to bits on its release, but if you buy the american R1 dvd you get a longer version with some lost scenes put back in (true completists will have to track down the laserdisc version for the nearly fully restored film.... aah laserdisc, what a format you were... sigh..)

Oh and don't forget the Hammer version of Hound of the Baskervilles with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, it's a great film too. Beautifully filmed with all the lush (or garish) colours that Hammer was famous for.

Much better homoerotic tension too. Rewatched the series a year or two ago. Marvelous fun.

Anyone voting for Richard Hannay? Bear in mind he had 39 Steps well before Corinda's 13  !

Another recommended spoof - The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes's Smarter Brother - lots of obscure references to the original stories.

Also look out for this series on the Paranormal Channel - very funny:

For the real Holmes - Jeremy Brett every time. In my own personal view, the Rathbone films were terrible.

There was Without A Clue, featuring a hapless Holmes (Michael Caine) and a genius Doctor Watson (Mahatma Kinglsey). This means Jude Law was one casting choice short of filling Michael Caine's boots yet again.

And Brett rocked. Haunted, manic genius.

What was the version that played around with the idea that Holmes was Moriarty? A great conceit, I thought, but I've never seen it.

That depends on which version of the film you happen to see.
Ive never understood why they changed the ending.

Im torn between the original hitchcock/ Donat, and the keneth moore version of the story. Both have their merit.

They were - steps. None of the films bear much resemblance to the book. I've read all five Hannay novels.

I'd forgotten that one. Very funny and great theme music.

BTW, I also recommend the Lestrade books by M J Trow - a cross between whodunnnit and historical novel, and very, very funny with it.

I wouldnt worry to much. Downey did an excelent job with Chaplin. His accent in that was, fairly impecable.
