Card springing

Postby MagicIain » Apr 14th, '04, 13:32

I sit at my desk at work, all day, with a deck of Bikes by my side. I make a lot of phone calls and tend to play with the cards while on the phone, practising tricks, sleights and flourishes pretty much all day.

However, having recently re-read RRTCM, I have been concentrating on the flourish side of my card handling.

Springing the cards from one hand to the other is a flourish that i can not get quite right, as the cards tend to shoot in one of two directions, either off my thumb or off the fingers, and never straight out of my hand. Is this what happens when you correctly spring the cards? If it is, then I've simply got to be better at catching them. If it isn't, then can anyone shed some light on how to get the cards springing from my hand correctly.

Is there an issue with how much power i apply to the bending of the cards, or the speed at which i let them go or... or... or... there are so many factors involved, and RRTCM explains it in about three steps!

Any help would be appreciated. I've lost at least three cards now behind one of the heaters in here and everyone in the office laughs at me for making a mess! (to be fair it is quite amusing!)

if memmory serves and i have to say im not a cardie myself but when i was doing it i found it important to get a good deep grip in the thumb crotch and let the cards shoot from the fingers, try initialy doing a card spread by springing the cards useing your little finger for suport then get further away as you get the mussle memmory.

thanks go to j sankey for this tip, i cant remember which dvd its on but if i do i'll let you know.

I can spring the cards pretty well, me thinks...
It looks impressive too, for those without the know-how...

I agree that a good grip on the cards is useful but you have to bend the cards quite a bit to get them to spring out of your hands.
You must try and have all the cards spring in one motion rather than in several packets.
I would suggest you practice the springing motion before you move onto catching but when you're ready...
Hold the hands very close and keep them close to your chest aswell. This will help you to cradle the cards as you catch them.
Gradually move your hands further apart.
I would say that the catching hand should be spread wide, almost like a baseball glove. I aim to catch the cards between my thumb and fingers 2&3. with fingers 1&4 supporting the long edge of the cards.

Not sure how useful this is, But hope it helps... Good Luck.

ps a card spring with three less cards, is just as impressive you know, :D
