What hand do you use in front of the mirror?

Postby Lady of Mystery » Aug 6th, '09, 15:10

Now now, you can all get those filthy thoughts out of your heads now!

Here's a little interesting thing that I found this morning when I tried to put my makeup on. Last night I managed to slice my left index finger when doing dinner so have a plaster around it.

What's that got to do with putting on makeup? Well I've never really thought about it before but it turns put that I use my left hand to put on makeup in front of the mirror (I'm right handed) and because of my plastered finger had to use my right hand. I just couldn't do it. Not until I tried to put it no without the mirror, then it was easy.

How strange, perhaps there's some odd left\right thing going on when you do things in front of a mirror? Does the brain box get confused because of the mirror image.

I tried it when brushing my hair and found the same thing, left hand in front of the mirror, right hand away from it.

Give it a try.... :D

I've found that no matter which hand I use to put makeup on, I get funny looks from people in the street. I must not be doing it right. :?

Similar thing, there are times when I can't for the life of me remember how to tie my tie! In cases like that the only way to get round the problem is step away from the mirror, focus on something else for a moment or two, then just do the tie up facing a blank wall or something. The brain gets confused with too much input so if you remove one aspect of the confusion the other parts take over and do the job easily. No, I've never tried putting make up on either - except for theatrical purposes and that's a different process!

The brain can certainly be confused when looking in a mirror. I have had my lower right leg amputated for 10 years now and suffer from phantom pain, if i sit on the floor and place a mirror between my legs so it reflects my left leg it looks like i have 2 legs again and hey presto no phantom pain. :D :D

You should always use your mirror when you're changing gear.

Wait, I think I might have got confused there.

Seeing as this is a magic forum, does anyone have the same problem whilst practicing (magic) in front of a mirror?

Too late!

This is an interesting thread. All I will say is: Now you lot know how us left handers feel when we have to use all those things made for right handed people! Can openers, knives (have you ever tried slicing bread left handed?!), playing cards!, ergonomic mice, scissors, the kitchen sink (taps on the right), wristwatches etc. etc. We've had to learn things the wrong way round all our lives.

Stop yer moaning and get on with it  :P

I'm left-handed and never had any problems with those things. I wear my watch on my left wrist, can openers are fine, same with knives and bread, I use scissors right-handed, etc. etc. I've just learnt to adapt. I must be slightly ambidextrous, too.

I'm just special. :D

Smarty pants!

How on earth do you use scissors right handed? I just tried it and it's physically impossible. You are either a traitor or an imposter. Or special.
