My first suggestion is that you spend the next couple of years learning ALL levels of slight-of-hand technique for every conceivable type of object e.g. you need to know coins, cards, balls, cigarettes and everything in between large & small as well as ways for ditching & stealing no matter what you're wearing.
You may want to spend a few month hanging with Geatton Blume (sp) as well in that he's a master Sleever... I actually saw him sleeve a full bottle of champagne one night at the Castle.
Gimmicks are all very limited, even a $3,000.00 Hold Out can only do so much so the best thing you can do is learn how to use your hands...

Before you say your hands are too small, chubby, stubby fingers, etc. you might want to catch footage of Kalanag doing his Billiard Ball routine. The man had very short, fat fingers and yet he was exceptionally elegant, learning how work WITH his "handicap" rather than making excuses to not do something.
Yes, it's a challenge... a royal pain in the tukkis.
No, there is not assurance that you'll be able to "vanish everything" but there is a guarantee that you will be able to do a heck of a lot more, any time and any where than you can do right now or with ANY mechanical system.
Resources for learning such mechanics?
I'd start with the old Jeff McBride Manipulation videos, they are quite good for learning the basics.
The Bill Tarr books "Now You See It, Now You Don't" are likewise excellent and easy to learn from
I know that there are other specialty books and DVDs out there these days but I'm far removed from that side of the craft, thus I cannot fill you in. But then if you are serious about your goal, you'll find it on your own
