I was a fairly regular poster here not too long ago but a rugby injury (broken left middle in 2 places and torn tendons) has meant ive had to lay off the cards for the last 10 weeks.

Im nearly better now and my works are having a talent competition which ive been asked to compete in for some variety. The competition will be in a bar and i assume will be for about 100 people so im wondering which, if any, card tricks people think would work on that scale. Most of the things i do are close up.

I'm not a working pro but have performed at a few weddings and parties for friends etc and have a good knowledge and ability of most sleights (apart from my pass which still needs lots of work).

I was thinking about Extractor, Lennarts Rain Man with the prediction on a flipchart or possibly Coinvexed but i was unsure if it would work on that kind of scale.

I think it will only be 1 or possibly 2 tricks due to the time limit so i wanted them to hit hard.

I have a few months so should be enough time to learn something new if necessary. Ive got Colour burn coming in the post too, perhaps that would be ok?

Sorry to hear about your rugby injury, not good not good at all but hope you make a full recovery

I'm not really sure that Coinvexed will work on that scale as people will have to react to the specs on stage reaction as they are the only one going to be able to see anything like that at all.

As for card tricks, they need to play big so maybe using something like Trilogy Streamlined with the predictions written onto a board or Smart Ass by Bill Abbot if you want to go down a funnier route

Rope will work well on stage as well I think or what about getting several signed cards found in the middle of a big object or something like a Pie? Lots of presentations can be used for this like health and safety (always a fun topic ) or part of a celebration etc. Idea from Andrew James this as I same him perform something similar so credit to him here

For an audience of that size I would certainly steer away from any card effects unless you are using jumbo's .

Agecrofts suggestion of Smartass is a good one as is any effect that is virtually self working as it means you can spend your time putting together a tight presentation and you will have less to stress about on the night.

What you really have to think about is your stage personna and that should dictate the kind of effect you perform.
Serious or funny. Lively or Stoic etc.

100 people isnt that big an audience, and if it was a caberet setting, and your standing in the middle of them, they could be quite close.

and, even if you are on stage, its fine to use standard sized playing cards. the rule is, place distance between you and your on stage helpers.
Also, most important, make sure that you dont spread anything on a table. because then your audience wont see.Hold the deck up, and in your hands.

Ive done this many, many times and it's as good a stge effect as the torn and restored cigarette papper.You focus their atention onto that one card.
This is also very good, if your working with a mike stand, because you can work around it.
