So I'm in college. And one of my classes is an old testament class. As part of my curriculum I'm required to learn all the books of the old testament. And for extra credit I can learn the new testament to. I'm having some trouble learning them however. I was wondering if anyone knew of a smiple memnonic(sp) that I could look up and use to learn them.

They're really not all that difficult I had to learn them when I was in the Scouts for a merit badge + several passages from Psalms, the entire Sermon on the Mount and two or three other key passages in both, old & new testaments... I was about 14ish at the time.

I'm not certain there's any kind of anagram that can help on that front but if you have the cash I do know someone with a Cerebro unit for sale... that and a partner might just make things work for you

Mnemonics

Postby LewyD » Sep 16th, '09, 10:58

Hi flaw07, yes i know of a couple of mnemonics which may help. Unfortunately it will take some effort and research on your part but then again... once you know them they change your life. unfortunately i havnt learned the bible and so cant advise you directly how but i know it is possible (i have read a few books). First up learn mnemonics for numbers (not 1 = bun, 2 = shoe etc) i.e. 1 = the letter L, 2 = n, 3 = m, 4 = r, 5 = f/v 6 = b, 7 = t, 8 = sh/ch, 9 = g and 0 = s once you have learned this, make a word or 2 out of the numbers. so say you need to remember a bible passage and its leviticus chapter 25 verse 19, i would imagine a levitating (leviticus) kNiFe (so i made a word out of the letters 2 and 5 so i know that a knife is 25) which then suddenly plunges itself into a LeG (making a word out of numbers 1 and 9, so 19 is a LeG) then if you can somehow relate it to the story you can memorise it. i know its slightly confusing at first but stick with it. read Your Memory: and how to improve it - by kenneth higbee, read 'Learn to Remember' by dominic o'brian, READ TRICKS OF THE MIND BY DERREN BROWN (this has a chapter on memory which got me started with GOOD mnemonics and it has changed my life) i am now obsessed with memory and if you read this paragraph a few times it MIGHT eventually make sense. stick with it and read as much as you can about mnemonics.

P.s. i forgot to note that remembering the different books of the bible can be simple - just associate the names of the books to something you are more familiar with e.g. names - link them to people you might know or famous people. then link the names to the chapters numbers chapters to the verse nmbers, and verses to the content (pick out something vivid that you can visualise) remember to keep everything very vivid and the more obscure the memory link is the better.

Hope this helps you out

An old teacher of mine (in an Earth Sciences class where there were lots of lists to memorise) didn't think much of mnemonics. Her philosophy was, if you're going to all the trouble to remember the mnemonic, you might as well just remember the thing you want to remember.

There's a lot of power in music, or just rhythmic chanting. The stuff we had to memorise she put together into chants, and made us chant them in chorus. It worked a treat. More than 30 years later, and studying nothing on the subject since then, I can still remember sediment sizes in the order of their deposition.

If you have a lot of free time, it's definitly worth working your way through the Bible as an exercise in understanding one of the most influential texts on Western Society. There are some very beautiful passages nestled in there, as well as some horrific parts. I would suggest skipping large sections of Numbers though as it repeats itself a lot and you may well find yourself bashing your head against the wall!

You'll also find out just how wrong most people are about specific sections of a book which they supposedly view as being the infallible word of God. If your average worshipper doesn't know how many of each animal went on the ark, it does make it hard to take them seriously when they use the Good Book as an excuse for their homophobia.

Still, good luck with memorising all the names of the books.

I'm not so certain that your adviser didn't have ulterior motives

Now there's an position I find wise that I can more than agree with

We human creatures tend to be willing to do far more work in order to delude ourselves that it makes things easier
